Hello all,

I'm residing for a short while in Khao San, which has been rennovated with new paved roads, a surplus of Isreali backpackers, and saw a scratching DJ competition last night at the Burger King end.

Anyway, does anyone know why every other backpacker carries a didgeredoo (sp?) and where can i buy one? I feel somewhat out-of-place among the throng, a little like being in Bali without a surfboard, and feel that this must be the new trend among the global adventureists, now that guitars are so passe. I think this is why Tuk Tuk's keep asking 'where i want to go' as i clearly stand out like a proverbial sore thumb despite putting on my finest Cambodia furrowed-brow stare, (or is it that i am wearing a 'same same but different' tshirt?).

Answers on a Patpong postcard plz...

I cant believe ive been here for two days and havent exchanged my email address. Amazing.

If any other of you 440's ers happen to be here in Bangers for the next few days drop us a pm and we can hook up. Thus we can avoid interacting with the backpackers who will recite their travels to us in fine-tooth comb details.

By the way, i used the PP to Bangers bus trip two days ago. It took 12.5 hours (7.30am start) and was almost all tarmaced (via Battambang) so is an easy days ride and well worth it at about $13+. Shame its only oneway. One berrang did sit in some khmer girls puke, so watch your seating arrangements.

There are probably so many of them thinking the same thing as you. A lot of people a really down on backpackers. I've been like that, too, on the site, but it was almost always related to some other issue. What I hate even more than backpackers are people who prize the fact that they live in Phnom Penh so much that they're unwilling to leave the comfort zone of that place they know so well to avoid exposing their ignorance and come to terms with the resultant unpleasant feelings.

I actually like to stay on KSR now, too. I took that bus many, many times in the past six months. Unlike the lake, it is a place where backpackers can meet people, gather information, and hook up for trips to other locations, which means that, although they may not get out much in Bangkok, they probably have a better time, and get to see more, when they're in the South or the North. The same can't be said, unfortunately, of the people who hang out at the Lake, since they've only been to Siem Reap and, consequently, have no information to share, and since they're all on their way out of the country and, consequently, can't hook up for more interesting trips around Cambodia.

Right on mate. I start going a bit potty if I don't get out of Cambodia every 4 months or so...as much as i love it here. Laos makes for a serene weekend getaway but when in Bangers I stay well away from KS Road. I'd far rather laugh at the Sukumvhit freak show than the KS road freak show. As for Israelis, remember that the wankers you see doing their straight out of national service year off are untypical of the average Israeli.

Just out of interest maybe you can update us on 'the longest period of time two backpackers have been seen sharing a cheap bottle of water whilst watching back to back movies at a cheap KS road cafe.'

I think that the current record stands at 11 hours and fifteen minutes but maybe someone has outlasted that vigil.

Get your arse over here to Phnom Penh matey. You know it makes sense.

I agree with you both - KSR is a great transit hub (hence im staying here) but its the 'average' backpackers not the place i tend to get a downer on. But we all started backpacking somewhere!

Shoudl be back in Cam in two weeks and get back on my nice new shiny XR!

When i saw him swinging his body towards sitting in the seat, I did try to warn him by saying, "dont sit in that Khmer girls travel sickness or you will stink of puke all the way to Bangers and get funny looks by everyone sitting around you and be shunned by every western when you ask for the nearest didgeredoo shop", but by then it was too late and gravity had taken effect.
