True Tales of Days Gone By ~ UNTAC recollections

With its large Chinese population, it should be renamed Spitsville.

For OML, Felger and other SEA vets, I saw this poem written by a Vietnam-era digger in a museum the other day:
What was it like over there,
Come on, tell me all about it.
But don't spoil any of my preconceptions.
Just tell me what it was really like.
Dont use words like service and sacrifice.
That's not what I want to hear.
Tell me about burning villages.
Tell me what it is really like.
There you go talking about mateship.
Talking about courage and fear.
Tell me about the drugs, man.
Tell me what is really was like.
What's all this about booby traps, tunnels,
jumping jack mines and mortar attacks.
Did you rape any women?
Tell me what was really like.
You go on about the heat and the mud,
The hard work and the lack of sleep.
Did you pick up a dose on R & R ?
Tell me what it is really like.
It's getting hard to talk to you.
You don't seem to communicate .
You get upset too easily.
I only asked what it was really like.

I saw a doc last month in which Ambassador Dean admitted that the carpet bombing of Cambodia encouraged people to join the KR. I still don't think it makes the USA responsible for the genocide, since this KR policy was secret at the time.

Having largely withdrawn from this forum, but having posted in some detail in this thread about Operation Commando Vault, that was classified for so many years, and my involvement in it, but which has now been in the public domain for quite some time now, I feel it is incumbent on me to post about the reason for what we did at that time and the follow up to it, ie, the INCURSION in to Cambodia.
To date, this is the best summary that I have seen of that Incursion.

So, khmerhit, given that the massive aerial bombardment of Cambodia over many years was also secret/classified at that time, how does your statement stand up?
Have you even availed yourself as to the official statistics of "The Air War In Indochina"?
I suggest that before you post such statements you read and digest Chapter 7 - The Air Campaign in Cambodia.
There can be no question what so ever about the statement that the massive B52 bombings of Cambodia, a country that was NOT at war with America, caused massive population displacement and huge numbers of refugees and loss of innocent lives and which created an environment conducive to the Khmer Rouge.
Those of us that served in Indochina at that time hold very different views to yours. Have you ever been on the ground in reasonable proximity to actually observe a B52 bombing raid? Cambodia deserved none of these raids even if it was "convenient" for America to sanction them.

Life and such gets in the way, but, I thought about this thread the other day for some reason.hotrats wrote: ↑Mon Nov 30, 2015 8:17 pmI just registered and this is my 1st post, but a long time lurker. This is the best thread I've read on the board.
My wife is Viet, and was in the Viet Army in the 80's. In '87, she was a nurse, in Cambodia. We've never talked about it in detail, I do know that they patched up wounded for transfer back to VietNam.
As OML states about traditional medicines, my wife has a good knowledge of such that she learned in the Army.
If anyone has any specific questions about her experience, I'll ask!
To expound on my wife's Cambodia time. Her step father was Cambodian/Chinese. For some reason, he had gone back to Cambodia maybe in '83-4, for in '84 she went to find him there, she would have been 16-17. She lived and worked there for a while. Was near the Central Market in Phnom Penh. Said she couldn't let on she was Viet, couldn't speak Vietnamese, as people were 'disappeared' as the Viets weren't 'liked'. When she went back with the army in '87, she was at one location, patching up soldiers. Said were a lot of amputations, a lot of gangrene I guess, because she spoke of the smell. She said there were 'clandestine' type operations too.
If there is any interest, i'll get more info from her, before, she wasn't so inclined. didn't understand why anyone would want to know

I would certainly love to hear her take on events here, as she was on "the other side" from my experiences in the later 1980s. Also, would love to hear anything about her experience regarding "clandestine" operations of the era.hotrats wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 1:15 amLife and such gets in the way, but, I thought about this thread the other day for some reason.hotrats wrote: ↑Mon Nov 30, 2015 8:17 pmI just registered and this is my 1st post, but a long time lurker. Bit of a long read and Pom politicico, but Hansard edited verbatim report of proceedings of both the House of Commons 1991, debating the UK Government (and SAS) involvement with training 'resistance groups' in Thailand.

Careful, or you'll have your post consigned to the/ a conspiracy thread.Bong Burgundy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 9:42 amBit of a long read and Pom politicico, but Hansard edited verbatim report of proceedings of both the House of Commons 1991, debating the UK Government (and SAS) involvement with training 'resistance groups' in Thailand.

From the article
I was a journalist in my previous incarnation. Inquiring journalism is a dying trade in this country, and those who practise it expect to be vilified. I framed some of the better attacks on me and they hang on my wall--"Loony MP backs bomb gang", "Mr. Odious", "Twenty things you didn't know about crackpot Chris", and so on. None of that surprised me, and I note that a number of similar articles are appearing about John Pilger. I am sure that he and Central Television will not be intimidated.
Up the workers!

I, too, would be very interested in hearing her detailed history and life story of her involvement..
If you go back through my main thread, you will see that at some point I actively encouraged a person with a similar story to that of your wife to make a major chronological and historical contribution to this thread/topic. Sadly, nothing has ever been heard since.
Your wife's story may be the one to open up the flood gates so to speak. History needs to hear all sides of a particular era.
