True Tales of Days Gone By ~ UNTAC recollections
Thanks LL. Those pics are savage.
Is the Russian embassy in the same location today? Where was the old US embassy?

The Russian Embassy is in that location now, and all those buildings are within the compound. The Russian Ambassador's house is on the opposite side of Sothearous along with some mystery Russian building. I'm not sure where the Russian Embassy was in the early 70s. The American Embassy was on Norodom near the junction with Sothearous. There was a former US embassy building behind it on Sothearous but it was demolished a couple of years ago.

It is massive, I'd imagine they got it during the PRK when massive amounts of Soviet aid were propping up the regime. It's a while since I looked but those apartment blocks always looked disused to me, with curtains blowing through permanently open windows.newnewnewbie wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 4:46 pmThat's quite a compound they have. 2 apartment blocks and all.

I’ve been in there quite a few times and whilst it’s not a hive of activity, its pretty well inhabited. The whole complex is huge and has many different buildings and wings to it. Most not accessible. It even has a badly stocked social club (bar) and full staffed Russian school.
It’s also rumored to be the home of “Office 870” back in the bad days.

Thanks, also, LL.
I had not seen those photos or that map of the LZs.
Is Aeon Mall # 1 sitting on some of the former LZ?

Aeon Mall is a few hundred meters south of LZ Hotel which was used because it was shielded from the river by those blocks of apartments. The other one looks to be in the grounds of what is now the Senate/ Ministry of Fish (Not the Department of Fisheries on Norodom which was the former US Embassy). In the 70s the Senate was the State Palace (AKA Chamkarmon Palace) and was used as Lon Nol's HQ.

Actually Aeon Mall isn't that far away, it adjoins the south of the Russian Embassy compound.

I'm a bit dubious as to the accuracy of this photo caption...
... U.S. Marines come under Khmer Rouge fire while they were on the ground near the U.S. embassy during Operation Eagle Pull which evacuated American and embassy personnel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on April 13, 1975. (Tea Kim Heang/AP)...
There are several aspects of this photo make me suspect its accuracy; not least the actions, dispositions and positions of the soldiers, never mind the casual position of the news movie film photographer standing to the upper right hand side. There is a casualness and disorder about it more suggestive of them seeking shelter from the down-blast detritus of medium lift helicopters arriving at speed under power or pulling out laden at speed under power. The troops are far too bunched together for incoming aimed small arms fire, machine gun fire or that of more area weapons such as RPGs, mortars even of the 60mm calibre let alone 81 mm calibre. Persons under fire do not abandon their rifle, flack jacket, helmet or webbing and ammo/grenades etc.
Can anyone confirm that those protecting the LZ came under fire on that day and what type of fire was it.?

Ambassador Dean never mentioned any enemy fire AFAIK. He claimed to be the last American to leave Phnom Penh.

I thought it was dubious too as I never heard of them coming under fire either. I just quoted the caption because it had the photographer's name.Ot Mean Loi wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2020 9:07 amI'm a bit dubious as to the accuracy of this photo caption...
