That was like my son's first impression of Angkor : "They're just a bunch of rocks and they're all broken".pedros wrote:Another reason not to return to the rocks in a field.
But he was only about four at the time.
Anyway, on the one hand it is the first price hike in a couple of decades.
Interesting scale there. seems to favor longer visits a lot. The couple of times I've been in the park I only stayed half a day or something. I don't know why, it is a wonderful site but I just get tired looking at ruins after a few hours.BBC wrote:So from 1 February a one-day ticket for foreigners will go from $20 to $38, a 90% increase.
A three-day ticket will go from $40 to $60, a weekly ticket from $62 to $72.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Depends. I hate going during high season. Its like McDonald's temples.
But slow season. It feels like i have the temples to myself and can enjoy the sights.

That's about my perspective on it too. The price has stayed the same for 20 years, so the annualised increase is something like 4%, which seems very reasonable, as does incentivising people to stay longer and therefore spend more overall... which should cushion the financial impact of a decrease in high-volume, low-value Chinese day-trippers and the general mayhem and destruction they cause. That's assuming that such a decrease even happens: the people you hear pissing and moaning on the internet about experiencing flat or declining numbers tend to cater to Western independent travellers, who are a relatively insignificant part of the market. Most of the Cambodians who benefit from the multi-billion dollar tourist industry have no particular use for white people who consider Angkor "rocks in a field" anyway... although I sympathise with that point of view. At least if you get sick of templing for your $37 you can sit down in the middle of Angkor Wat and have a couple of 2000r beers and have fun people-watching. I wonder if the folks who pay $50 to see Machu Picchu or whatever can do the same.Lucky Lucan wrote:That was like my son's first impression of Angkor : "They're just a bunch of rocks and they're all broken".pedros wrote:Another reason not to return to the rocks in a field.

Very obvious that they want people to spend a week in SR and not one day to do Angkor Wat.
The people are being cheeky not using multiples of 10 - someone will make a killing from incorrect change when the tour groups hit.

Don't think it's being cheeky.loy division wrote:Very obvious that they want people to spend a week in SR and not one day to do Angkor Wat.

Reckon they have used a Riel value of 150,000, converted it to USD then rounded up to nearest whole number.

I won't expect much from you, seeing the state you're in. I guess you're pitiable and just frustrated. Animals get like that in a cage.pedros wrote:Another reason not to return to the rocks in a field.

Would Stonehenge qualify as a "pile of rocks in a field?" Really, you've got some doltish comments revealing how little you know of Angkor Wat.
The Killing Fields - OK, just an open field, a few big trees, and the skulls they keep on display. That I can call "an empty field of nothing."
Tuol Sleng - a typical 3rd world high school, with horrifying photos on the wall. OK, genocide, out of the ordinary. But the building itself, blah.
But calling the largest Hindu temple city in the world a "pile of rocks" means you are devoid of ANY higher learning. Pitiable, what with your crappy education system and all.
Nothing personal, mind you, Peter Pedros of Kampong Spew.
The government is getting greedy, they will be money-grabbing, raising taxes and fees and fines, etc., in order to buy the next election. They are wary of a loss in 2018 and are stocking the "war chest" now.
China didn't help with the KR, AFAIK, right? The US was exhausted and had to leave the theatre of engagement. Europe ignored the KR crisis, AFAIK.
But only Westerners gave a damn in the aftermath. It's sad the Khmers are, like most ignorant people, becoming arrogant and less respectful of foreigners, on occasion.
Fool's folly is following another fool.
