Does anybody have any leads to *history of KR in Koh Kong?
Ben Kieran in "Pol Pot Regime" has some valuable snippets but I can find little else.
Also anything on *American bombing - and earlier *French settlement, in Koh Kong also.
The CIA satellite time-lapse records show almost continual bombing of one spot in the Cardomoms between about 1970 - 1973, and irregularly at a few other spots.
Presumably this is of known KR bases, I but can find no factual info.
*
I can find nothing on earlier french settlement.
Other;
*Joseph Conrad was here and wrote very evocatively.
*Also a CIA man doing a reconnaissance along the entire Koh Kong coast is fascinating
- i could go digging into my files for these references if anyone is interested.

I had an autobiography of Tea Banh (current Minister for National Defence), and he was in the Issaraks in the 50s and later the liberation movement in the 1970s, where at first Koh Kong was an almost autonomous area. He is ethnically Thai, and sometime around 1973 Pol Pot tried to have him purged. He fled to Thailand with his loyal troops and set up a base there which at first was involved in some military actions against the Khmer Rouge but was later disbanded by the Thais. In 1977 he sailed to Vietnam and was involved in the creation of the salvation front (FUNSK).
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Yeah Tea Bah It is is a local Koh Kong boy. He was also the informant to Kiernan for the Koh Kong snippets in his "The Pol Pot regime".
The author I note, is No2 at Defence ministry so maybe it is not exactly an unvarnished history. What did you think the book??

It was an interesting story, especially as he went renegade so early on, but of course I had to wonder what was left out.

Interesting. I might track that book down.
(I follow both his sons on FB - Rescuing turtles, giving money to poor, opening up a petrol station on one of the islands. That sort of thing)

Yes, interesting story interesting man.
Please keep me in mind if you come across any more pre '92 Koh Kong history. I would like to pull together a little archive of what is available.
Or, leads to any other pro or amateur historians interested in KK.

It's not an easy book to find, you might find a copy in PBC or IBC, I don't know where my copy went.Hairy-nosed Otter wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 6:25 pmThanks again, hopefully I will track down a copy next time i get into town - hopefully the Russian Market edition.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 1:19 pmIt was an interesting story, especially as he went renegade so early on, but of course I had to wonder what was left out.
