For those interested in the traditional Cambodian performing arts, here is an interesting article on Sbek Thom Shadow Theatre performed with large, handmade leather silhouettes at night held against an illuminated screen.
Over the years I have attended several of these performances at Wat Bo in Siem Reap, one of which went for many hours.
For those interested in learning more about this ancient performance, I also have in my personal reference library the joint UNESCO SEAP illustrated publication by Pech Tum Kravel - Sbek Thom: Khmer Shadow Theatre - which, fortunately, is in English and Khmer.

The Sbek Thom performance that went for several hours was that of the Reamker - the Cambodian version of the Ramayana.
Here is a short video about Sbek Thom and the Reamker for those not familiar with either.

Apart from the language this could be a wajang performance on Java, similar instruments too.

Hello Visser - you are very much on the cultural heritage money so to speak.
Possibly of Khmer descent, Jayavarman II came from Java, where he had been in captivity or exile, to succeed to the throne as Java's vassal around 800. An unwilling puppet, he defied the Javanese and asserted Khmer independence in 802, when he also was installed under Hindu rites as devarāja, or god-king.
And from which certain cultural similarities originate and have continued in various forms.

I always wondered about that official reading seeing it was not that long after the founding of the Mataran kingdom and there are no proven links between Java and Cambodia at the time apart from being on the same Indian and Chinese trade routes.
Puppets are usually the children of conquered kings etc that were taken back home for security/insurance and then groomed into become a puppet ruler.
What would you do if you were a wondering Javan general that grew up within a cluster of active volcanoes and now find yourself surrounded by safe and ideal farmland and an abundance of fresh water? I would not be surprised if the guy that conquered the Khmer lands set himself up as king.
