Can anyone help me out? I think I recall they held some motocross once or a few times in a Phnom Penh stadium in the late nineties or early 2000's. Was it in the old stadium?
(I recall the hills and jumps run just across the Japanese bridge. Played there a few times. but never confident enough to get much air. The Flying Bikes group and the French Insurance/racing enthusiast were the main forces pushing the sport.)
Recent History of Motocross in Cambodia
I think I now recall the Frenchman's name, I believe something like Yves Catry. (Please correct spelling if you know it, or know him. And sorry about spelling if you are him!)
I don't think I ever met him, but as well as being an expat businessman in Cambodia he was kind of a gentleman racer. I think doing things like Paris-Dakar and similar.
If anyone has any pictures from those early motocross days, I'd be keen to see them. Thanks!

Thanks for the pic!
Maybe it was all around then, 2007, but I thought it was earlier. I got my first dirt bike, tax legal, from Flying Bikes in 2000. (It had been almost like new, but I cooked the engine, 1st time, tooling through Nan Province exactly 12 months later. Love Nan!) Pretty sure the Flying Bike gang were already going to the track across the bridge then. Don't think it was nearly as far as Prek Leap though, maybe the track moved because the area across the bridge was developing so fast? Mostly fields on the peninsula north of the bridge when it was repaired and reopened, but after a few km the huge restaurants, especially Mekong side, opened up very fast! However, I was mostly in the provinces by then and the details are vague.
Yes, I think that would be the guy.
The group was a mix of Khmer and expats, growing to more khmer but maybe a 50:50 mix for quite a while. Cambodia's first Moto tour companies were born around then and some, at least till the virus, were still in that business at least part time.

I came to Cambodia 19 years ago this month. In 2007 they called the area where the MX track Prek Leap.At that time the development was moving in fast. You could see they wouldn't be there much longer.Total was the sponsor for the last race I went to.That had riders from a few other nearby countries. Some were surprisingly good. The meat wagon was hauling people to the hospital all day. Most of my pictures got lost in a computer crash a year later so I only have a few shots.
Thanks Eddie, glad to make acquaintance with someone who was involved. Cheers!
I do think they had motorcycles in one of the Phnom Penh stadiums at least once though. Huge jumps, huge air, mostly international riders (I think), I thought it was a race, but it might have been more a demonstration to get folks revved up about dirt bikes when there weren't yet so many around. I would expect a bunch of pictures in the Phnom Penh Post archives, but a quick google located none. (Maybe there is a pay firewall?) I'll refine the search.

I don't remember anything like that. But that's not to say it didn't happen.MX here seems to be hot for a while then disappears for years.I want to go down to Kampot to see the nighttime backyard races at someone's house. After covid. Siem Reap did something a few years ago but it was more like an enduro / MX mix.Now there is a little track about two K East of the ticket booth. Not bad but VERY dusty!
The French guy got caught up in some plan to turn the Kompong Chhang airport into a regional cargo hub.Maybe it was his plan.If I remember correctly, he went to Malaysia and they brought him back and put him in jail. And he lost everything.Might not be the same person so don't hold me to it.

There were a few expats very interested in that airport, but I'm not sure either if he was one.
I recall having a drink with one of the Ordnance disposal guys in his bar on Route 5 halfway between K, Chhanang and the turn off for that runway. And I know some real estate was exchanged all around it on the pretext that SE Asia Cargo jets just were begging for cheap parking space, but,... yeah, I can't say for sure, but he seemed to connected to stay in Jail long. I don't think it was him. More likely the de-minner.
