Still B-52 Craters In Neak Loeung?
Planning a return trip to PP in the coming months and wanted to see some (unusual and historic) sites outside of town. Are any B-52 craters in Neak Loeung still visible from the bombing in the 70's?
Actually, I only selected Neak Loeung because of the noteworthiness of the place, but if there are still visible bomb craters in other towns not far from PP please advise.

You think seeing a divet in the ground is "unusual and historic"?
It’ll be the same anticlimax as losing one’s virginity to a young lady.

I doubt there would be any in the town as they would have been filled in. There are plenty still around the country, maybe look on Google Earth.barangPP wrote: ↑Sun Feb 20, 2022 7:24 pmPlanning a return trip to PP in the coming months and wanted to see some (unusual and historic) sites outside of town. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

You know they are just big holes in the ground? There isn't really much to see.
They aren't marked and most in non-urban or farmed land (which would be filled in) are overgrown or full of water.
I've never gone looking for them but when out visiting friends/staff in province several have been pointed out to me. Prey Veng and Svey Reing have loads.

Yes, the non-native and recently endangered species called ‘tourist’, gibbons hide up in the trees later in the doc.
How did they determine they were B52 craters. Were they not made by China or Russian planes dropping bombs. I know it wasn't the USA cause tricky Dicky Nixon told us they were never at war in Cambodia.
Russian and Chinese bombers were not part of that conflict.Cooker wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 5:00 pmHow did they determine they were B52 craters. Were they not made by China or Russian planes dropping bombs. I know it wasn't the USA cause tricky Dicky Nixon told us they were never at war in Cambodia.

People always get the "Operation Menu" which was secret and the later overt "Operation Freedom Deal" confused. There was nothing secret about Freedom Deal, anyone who lived in Cambodia could hear the arclights. People living in Phnom Penh, including foreign journalists, were quite aware of these as they often targeted Khmer Communist positions in close proximity to the capital/Guest wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 5:55 pmRussian and Chinese bombers were not part of that conflict.Cooker wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 5:00 pmHow did they determine they were B52 craters. The only countries that bombed Cambodia from the air in the civil war period were USAF (US Airforce), RVNAF (South Vietnam Airforce) and KAF (Khmer Airforce). While China and Russia may have supported North Vietnam during the conflict that never went so far as to bomb any positions in "Indochina". After the communist takeover there was the Mayaguez Incident which resulted in Kampong Som port and some oil refining facilities being bombed but there was no other bombing from the US after that. There was a mysterious bombing in Siem Reap in February 1976 but nobody has ever explained that.
So fast forward to 1978, China has been busy building a giant runway in Kampong Chhnang, and Chengdu J-7 fighters are starting to arrive at the airfield. This, combined with the constant attacks on Vietnamese territory lead to direct war. The Vietnamese had signed a defense agreement with the USSR just prior to their invasion. Vietnam had Soviet, Chinese and captured US planes in its inventory. So Cambodia was definitely bombed by Chinese and Russian Planes, they just weren't being flown by Chinese or Russians.

The most bomb craters that I have seen were Southwest of Kompong Thom city.Maybe it was a free drop zone. From the air sometimes buffalo wallows look like bomb craters. But the ones in Kompong Thom are staggered and the spacing is even. Some maps show an airstrip in the area but I have never seen any thing that looks like it's on high enough ground to stay dry in the wet season.
Thanks for this info...got any GPS coordinates so i can check out google maps?Eddie wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 5:27 amThe most bomb craters that I have seen were Southwest of Kompong Thom city.Maybe it was a free drop zone. From the air sometimes buffalo wallows look like bomb craters. But the ones in Kompong Thom are staggered and the spacing is even. Some maps show an airstrip in the area but I have never seen any thing that looks like it's on high enough ground to stay dry in the wet season.
