A Japanese police officer who was shot dead 30 years ago while on a UN peacekeeping operation in Cambodia has been remembered in the capital Phnom Penh.
Superintendent Takata Haruyuki was killed on May 4, 1993 in an attack by an armed group. He was 33 years old. The UN mission followed decades of civil war.
About 20 people, including Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi and Cambodian government officials, offered a silent prayer before a cenotaph at a temple on Tuesday. They also offered incense sticks.
Ueno said Cambodia has restored peace, and its economy and society are developing. He said Japan will continue to support Cambodia's democracy.
One month before Takata's death, another Japanese man was shot dead in Cambodia. Nakata Atsuhito was working as a UN volunteer to monitor the country's elections.
