Jake Solomon’s first documentary, “The Last Thing Lost,” is a story with a couple of strong Madison connections.
He just had to go all the way to Cambodia to tell it.
The 43-minute film, which screens Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 at the Beloit International Film Festival, centers on Sarith Ou, a Cambodian teacher who fled the country to Wisconsin in the 1970s to escape the Khmer Rouge genocide. Decades later, with the help of a Vietnam War vet, Roger Garms, he moved back to his village in Cambodia to fulfill a promise to open a school there.
“I felt like the heart of the story was a redemption story,” Solomon said in an interview from his home in Chicago. “To live through one of the worst genocides the world has ever seen, and then have to go to another country and rebuild your life. And then making the choice to go back and fulfill that original promise that you made to help educate people in rural areas.
“He had seen the absolute worst of what humanity is capable of. And then made the choice to be a force for good.”

UW grad's documentary finds hope in Cambodian immigrant's story
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
In terms of purely numbers, Cambodia's genocide ranks low (around 2.5 million)
However, in terms of savagery and the long term effects on the country it ranks very highly, in my opinion
Anybody have a ranked list of genocides by number of victims?
