Ukraine still dominates the front pages while Burma is on page xxx if mentioned at all:
Southeast Asia is the ICC’s most elusive target
Political protection, legal holes and Ukraine present impediments to International Criminal Court human rights cases in the Philippines and Myanmar

https://southeastasiaglobe.com/southeas ... 44700f68e1...The horrors inflicted on Ukrainian civilians by Russian troops, which the Kremlin denies, continue to be documented by numerous media outlets. News reports from Myanmar, while garnering far less public attention, indicate equally shocking violations of international laws: troops executing civilians including Buddhist monks, putting villages to the torch and torturing detainees. Yet stories from Yangon, Magwe and Sagaing received scant coverage outside regional media even before the world turned its eyes to Kyiv, Mariupol and Bucha.
The Myanmar Accountability Project filed a criminal case against the junta in a Turkish court in March alleging torture of dissidents after the 2021 coup, VOA reported. The case relies on ‘universal jurisdiction,’ which enables charges to be brought anywhere when a crime’s severity exceeds geography.
"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST

The Karenni appear a much more potent fighting force than in previous iterations.....or is the Tatmadaw worse? Perhaps a little from column A and little from B.

Ko Jimmy and three other activists have been executed in Myanmar, the first use of the death penalty there for decades.

The Junta have gone from shooting across the bows to shooting below the waterline. They are clearly rattled.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Jul 25, 2022 1:22 pmKo Jimmy and three other activists have been executed in Myanmar, the first use of the death penalty there for decades.

Vicky Bowman, ex-UK Ambassador and the Head of the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business, has been arrested by the Junta and charged with immigration offenses. Vicky is a high profile figure in Myanmar, particularly in relation to the country's international profile, and her arrest is quite something of a surprise.

I always feel some kind of smirk coming on when people who consider themselves untouchable get touched.
caveat: I despise the Burmese dicktators

In situations where the rule of law has collapsed, I don't. It acts as a measure which means there are a lot of people below that who we don't hear about who are swept up in the system or simply disposed of. The higher the bar, the greater the volume.chamchom wrote: ↑Sat Aug 27, 2022 11:45 amI always feel some kind of smirk coming on when people who consider themselves untouchable get touched.

chamchom, I get what you mean, but Prahok is more right here. The person's motivation is relevant, but to me it comes across as acting with bravery for those unspoken for.
Not all 'famous' folk deserve praise when doing dangerous stuff, but some certainly do.

My point was that privileged people in society think they can get away with things that the non-privileged don't, and they begin to act like entitled karens. That implies a certain snobbery and feudal mentality.
I think you and I and prahok agree, perhaps I should have elaborated in my initial post.

Naypyidaw is in a curfew and under strick conditions regarding gatherings of people. This is significant as Naypyidaw is meant to be the most secure territory the Junta possesses.

I plead guilty to not following this story terribly closely. What exactly was the military's motivation for this incredibly self-destructive act? Wasn't Myanmar already on the upswing before this started? Looks like they're gonna be much, much poorer thanks to this...Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 11:45 amUkraine still dominates the front pages while Burma is on page xxx if mentioned at all:
