How long till Tourism in Myanmar surpasses Camboida
I figure by 2016/2017 they will UNLESS something really bad happens (like the current student protest escalates ) Visitor arrivals growing ( in the past 4 years) faster than Cambodia
Fantastic undiscovered beaches, ancient cities, a transport system all in place using flights, boats, trains, roads
Very friendly people, not as much visible poverty as Cambodia, transport cost very cheap, food same or less than Cambodia
Only hotels are overpriced but they will drop as supply is added.
malls not up to Cambodia yet ( with the new Aeon Mall now they are on par with Thailand), Road system better than Cambodia
Still very easy to get off the beaten path
NO SEX pats/western bars ( except a few in Yangon in the hotels) per say
Aiming for 4-4.5 mil this year
Stats from wiki

2014 3.08

It is a much bigger country but they do have a few problems:
Contrary to what you say, their roads are shite whereas Cambodia has made huge improvements in the last couple of years.
As you did say, everything tourism related is exorbitant.
Most importantly, their food is crap!!!
Having said that, I love the country and go at least once a year.

Ahh... I remember back in the good ol' days in 2008 when only around a quarter of a million arrivals were recorded, and most of them were border hops in northern Thailand and Port Victoria...

Unless things go really bad, I actually expect in 10 years Siem Reap will be the most populous city in Cambodia, it has one of the wonders of the world, Angkor wat (as easy as it is to forget) is on par with the pyramids at Giza, or stone henge, people will want to visit for decades to come.
Burma is an amazing destination, and will have a surge in the "exotic location" crowd but will quickly become a Laos without serious investment.

Those figures sound ridiculous. The tourist sector in Burma is the worst value in ASEAN except Singapore and maybe Brunei, and the government has actively been against all the extreme low end backpacker like development that gave various other destinations their start.
2017 might be the year they finally fix the room shortage/overpricing issue, although everything in the tourist sector is exorbitant. The comparison to Laos is apt, however Burma seems to be screwing up in the few areas Laos succeeded (dirt cheap rooms, fostering businesses foreigners will actually visit etc.)
Of course none of that matters if they can nab the Korean/Chinese tour bus crowd. Have them running from Rangoon to Bagan and stopping at whatever Sino-Burmese restaurants pay the best commission.

ancient cities,
One must be fair: not as spectacular as Angkor. Pagan was rebuild (=destroyed) by "donators" regardless of authenticity.
a transport system all in place using flights, boats, trains, roads
Most airlines are suicidal, like the good old PMT was or crashed already (Pagan Air)
Very friendly people,
People start to be arrogant and hate foreigners
not as much visible poverty as Cambodia,
Poverty in the villages, not long till urbanisation hit Yangon
transport cost very cheap,
Same as in Cambodia? Domestic flights are expensive in Myanmar
food same or less than Cambodia
Food is cheap but crap, unless you love lentils and chickpeas in greasy gravy
Only hotels are overpriced but they will drop as supply is added.
Now already they having problems finding good staff or train them due to the sudden demand. Service standards will drop soon to Thai levels.
Road system better than Cambodia
Except few roads around Mandalay and Naypyidaw, most roads are in poor conditions
The run will be soon over and numbers will grow slow. Not an attractive destination for Asian travellers because no casinos (yet) or significant religious sites. Cuba is the next hot destination for Americans.

I would take that as a recommendation to stay the fuck away.johnnyj wrote:Oh I forgot to mention, I would say in excess of 20 million visitors per year to siem reap, most of which will be Chinese
When even a nation's government introduces a programme to educate tourists, you know you're in trouble.
ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Should be compulsory for Western countries as wellWhen even a nation's government introduces a programme to educate tourists, you know you're in trouble.

A road system better than Cambodia? Really?
I think Burma has an awful long way to go, hotel prices are ridiculous, ethnic problems won't go away, power, banks, phones and the internet are lacking. There are still restrictions on travel aren't there? Can one go down the south Coast past moulemein towards Thailand yet?
I would like to go up the arakan coast to Bangladesh after reading the WW2 book about the region, but I think that is restricted. I would like or ride a motorbike around the country but I think that is impossible.
The dead hand of the military just won't go away ever I don't think and opposition woman is a waste of time and no fan of human rights for non Burmese.
The WW2 book says that the town of coxs bazaar that was in Burma in colonial times was set up in the late 1700s as a refuge for Rohingya refugees so the propaganda that they are recent arrivals is crap. Of course during the war they were on our side as were other tribes, the Burmans hated us.

when were u last there?
I rode around lots of roads ( on a motorcycle) around Mandalay of course there were some shit ones (the road up to Mogok from Kayaukme
and the road between Hispaw and Namshan) but major roads connecting the major cites are good. 1 friend rents bikes an does trips out of Mandalay, another friend lives and owns a motorcycle in Yagoon, ( yea he needs be careful when he leaves the city) an makes frequent multi day trips out of the city.
People are exploring by motorcycle more an more each month an there have been a few successful tours from Thailand in the last 6 months
Sim cards are as low as $2 and internet usage is covered in all the tourist areas,
True, There are still restricted areas an 15 ethnic groups are fighting with the goverment.
BUT my point is once they get their shit together, tourism will grow an surpass that on Cambodia ( BTW there are a few casinos in Country)
During the high season around SR is hell with the Chinese an there less than 600,000 of them /year, I cant even Imagine what it would be like with 20 mil
I am not happy with "the lady's" responses to the Rohingya issue but she needs think of who would vote for her and what they feel..
Overall it is easy to travel there and hotel prices will drop as more are built and i stand by my time frame 2016/17
