The two face charges of defamation, which is a criminal charge in Thailand, and with offences under the Computer Crimes Act.
If found guilty they could face up to two years in prison for defamation and five years for breaching the Computer Crimes Act, as well as a B100,000 fine.
The charges were formally brought to trial after a complaint filed by the Royal Thai Navy. The complaint relates to an article published by on the Phuketwan website in July last year.
The article quoted an investigation by the Reuters news agency, which alleged that some members of the military were involved in trafficking Muslim Rohingya refugees who had fled Myanmar.
Testimony will be heard today through Thursday, before recess. A date for the trial to resume has yet to be set.
The case has drawn criticism from human rights and press freedom groups around the world, with many international observers and members of the press present at the Phuket Provincial Court today.

Trial of Phuketwan journalists begins
its been a long time coming and one would think after the events this year with the Rohingya, it would not matter, but face must be saved at all costs.
"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST

These are the guys who proved the Thai Navy are a bunch of degenerate people-smuggling scum who deserve a smack upside the head with a shovel, and now the Thai Navy are claiming they aren't a bunch of degenerate people-smuggling scum who deserve a smack upside the head with a shovel, despite overwhelming evidence they are a bunch of degenerate people-smuggling scum who deserve a smack upside the head with a shovel?

This will be a re-run of the Greste case on a smaller scale if he gets jailed for it. That case caused some diplomatic issues between the West and Egypt.Gin&Tonic wrote:Whilst I sympathize for the reporter he had to know the risks of publishing such an article whilst inside the country. It's not like the government there are setting a precedent by charging him.
Foreign journalists getting jailed is one of the few things that will get the foreign embassies off their asses and doing things, so I can't see them getting any serious time unless the Junta is up for some chest beating.
