Yes I know I am in Cambodia but maybe somebody has some input
I am looking into moving to Thailand, at first a limited period to see how this go. Obtaining a Non-O Marriage visa is relatively simple and lasts for 1 year (my wife and daughter both have the Thai nationality). Once there, obtaining a work permit is not too hard however I plan to work online.
What if life is well? Then the Permanent Residency Permit is an option. Here things get more tricky. The following options are available:
Residence Permit Categories:
2.1 Investment -> Minimum of $300.000 for a minimum of 3 years, in real estate or a bank account.
2.2 Employment -> CEO level or >Thb 80.000 p/m
2.3 Humanitarian reasons -> Married/Child and >Thb 30.000 p/m
2.4 Expert -> Bachelor diploma and specific industries
2.5 Extra circumstances on a case by case basis -> N/A
For option 2.4 I lack the bachelor requirement but my work experience does match. Option 2.1 would take some more years to reach. Option 2.3 would be possible but depends on what counts as "income".
So this leads to my two questions:
- Does the investment visa automatically gives you the residency permit after the required 3 year holding period? I.e. is it worth to go this route compared to option 2.3?
- How does online work count towards the monthly income requirement for option 2.3?
I would be working for non-Thailand based employers. Money brought in from abroad would be taxable so this would fulfill the requirement you pay tax in Thailand. However some months I would make more money than others (e.g. family visit back home). Is it ok to dip below the requirement as long as the monthly average balances out at year end?

IF u have a thai wife, go to the thai embassy in PP with her an ur marriage paper an apply for a single entry non o visa for reason of marriage, valid for 90 days
you than once in country apply for an Extension of stay based on Marriage which is valid for 1 year, you need show 400,000 in the bank for 2 months an lots of other shit.
TO get a wp, ( no idea who told u its not hard but......) u need a company with a total investment on paper of 2 million Baht an u need have 4 thai staff on ur books, There is NO wp for for working online , sorry.
PR VERY DIFFICULT TO GET!!!!!
I have known people that LIVE and have raised their Farang kids in Thailand an still after 20+ years do not have PR
read this thread on thai visa; http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/867 ... -resident/
This eliminates u;
1. You have to prove you have an income to support your wife;
2. You have to prove the income was earned in Thailand.

Thanks for the info Phuket! I did see the bold statement however I could not really get that out of the legal documents.
Anyway, the work permit requirement is mentioned in the details I see now. I will look into requirements for starting a company to bypass this if I go the marriage/child route. My area of expertise is not listed as banned occupation so I might be able to work in the same field.
What does surprise me is the fact it is also listed for the investment visa which seems odd to me. Do you know anybody who ever got PR based on investment and how they dealt with the WP? http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/do ... est_en.pdf
When things get more serious I drop by the Thai embassy in PP as we have connections there who can advise on the best way to do this. PR is not a necessity but would help me sleep better at night. Another possibility would be staying in Cambodia but relocate to the border (SR). However visa rules won't stay this relaxed forever....
