I am reading that you need a special license to ride > 175cc in Vietnam ? True / False ?
I am also reading that because no-one rides a large bike in Vietnam, you become a target for the cops ? true / false ?
When taking a large ( 400cc ) bike over into Vietnam, what do they want to see at the border ? If you do not have the original rego card for the bike is it possible to get over with some tea money ? If you do get over, is it then risky riding around every day without the card ?
If you get pulled over by the cops in Vietnam what is the first thing they ask for ? license / rego / bribe ?
Also....I am seeing 2nd hand late model scooters like the 09 Nuovo etc seem to be insanely cheap over there ( $400 or so ) ? Are they in decent knick or flogged to death ?
thanks
Taking a large bike into Vietnam + other moto ??s
It used to be quite expensive to take a big capacity bike over, but things have probably changed given Ducati and KTM both sell big bikes there now. Taking a bike over without papers in your name sounds like a recipe to have your bike confiscated. Certainly won't be possible to register it properly.
The A2 class licence for 175cc+ bikes sounds difficult to get, but if you've got that you should be fine.
I never had any troubles from police in 3 trips over there, inside and outside the cities, but was never on anything above 125.
All bikes seem to be a bit cheaper over there, except the honda win clones which magically maintain their $200 sentimental value.

Cheers. A real shame it is such a hassle. I read that new imported bikes get a 120% tax so they are hellishly expensive compared to even here.
THink i will just buy a Nuovo to scoot around on. I had one before and they are a great little bike.

OK me again....
I was thinking an FTR would make a great commuter over there. Possibly even an SL230
Both are 230cc bikes
Assuming all papers are in order.......is it relatively easy to switch them to Viet plates etc or do you not even bother ?
I have seen some for sale over there but they are hellishly expensive compared to here.
thanks

I've heard it's hellish even if the papers are in your name (and you have a >125 license). Don't even think about bringing the DRZ if you don't have the paperwork. You'll need to get a local licence if you stay a while. I only know one guy who somehow managed to get a bigger bike in and it cost him and arm and a leg. Just get a scooter like everyone else, or buy a bigger bike once there (few and far between). Great country to ride in though when you get free time, especially the north. I did see a few larger sports bikes around while riding. Locals I assume.
