Tet, Vietnamese New Year...
Any advice from those who know on what to expect. Banks will be closed of course , but what about other businesses? Do you think it would be better to be in a major town during/ around Tet or in some smaller provincial town, mountain or beach?
I have no idea on what to expect, so any useful info will be gratefully appreciated.
Cheers

Whilst the time just prior to Tet is nice, if crowded, I am no big fan of Tet itself. Most businesses, not just banks, will close; at least the first two days of Tet.horace wrote:Any advice from those who know on what to expect. Traveling will be a pain in the but as half of Vietnam will be on the move just before and after Tet.
Big cities will be pretty much deserted and people in the villages will be busy with themselves.
Popular destinations (Ha Long, Phu Quoc, Hoi An, Da Lat) will be heaving as more and more Vietnamese forsake tradition and go on a holiday instead.
Avoid the roads as they will be full of drunk drivers.
I regrettably have to spend this Tet in Vietnam and am not really looking forward to it. And it is almost 10 days this year

Off topic; but just curious as to what visa you have for Vietnam, Horace?

Jusr a normal three month single entry. Could have got multiple entry but not worth the extra 20 dollars.Jessb52 wrote:Off topic; but just curious as to what visa you have for Vietnam, Horace?

I heard they invade the cities and massacre everyone on Tet, or is that not a thing anymore?

i have been in saigon and in can tho and at my mother-in-laws place way down at the bottom of the delta.
i liked saigon best.
all the parks are filled with flowers and decorate trees for sale...
street food pops up everywhere..
and it's not too crowded as yes... most people go back to there province for the holiday.

Cheers for the info chaps. I'll be somewhere north of Hue , halfway to Hanoi if you have any recommendations on a place to be.

This. You have probably noticed that Vietnamese are not the best drivers in the world. Add "rieu" (rice alcohol) into the equation and it gets pretty scary.horace wrote:Won't be on any train. So the info seems to suggest stay off the roads , no cycling! Find a nice place and stay put for a week.
