Tourists being denied entry unless they have 20000
Tourists being denied entry unless they have 20000
Here's an interesting - an not entirely unexpected - development in Thailand. There are increasing reports of people being denied entry to Thailand unless they have 20,000 baht with them. It looks like a concerted effort to stop two things: begpackers, but more importantly expats who live there using loose visa regulations and do regular visa runs.

I don't see how it will be too effective in stopping begpackers, I'd imagine most do have 20,000 baht when they arrive.

Bollocks! I entered by bicycle Thailand yesterday at Chong Mek border with Laos. I had absolutely no problems or questions about anything, other than interest in my bike three of em came out to ask questions about it and where I had been , how many k I had done , etc, when I told em that I was just doing a visa run from Laos and would turn around at the first opportunity they just laughed. Interestingly when I asked whether I would need a visa next time I entered Thailand they said no and indicated that I had one more visa free entry left even tho I have entered Thailand twice in the last few months without a visa.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

Are they checking people's ATM balances? I don't usually fly into Bangkok with that much cash in my pocket.

Just because it didnt happen to you, doesn't mean it's not happening. There are numerous instances of it happening being recorded.

all the people ( i think there have been all of 3 people reporting hey were stopped now on thai visa and not allowed in ) that have been reporting being detained had more than a few back to back tourist visas or visa exempt entries, no visible income, no return ticket to anywhere and no 20,000 baht in hand.
It does not affect those with the correct visa living here at all.
an OLD law being enforced ( something the thais love to do selectively)
Same ole same ole
got the correct visa, no problems
Note ur ONLY allowed 2 visa exempt land entries/calendar year, after that u want come in by land, make sure u have a visa

Probably only happening to people that dress like a marmite sandwich.

In the last four months I have had to deal with Thai immigration police on three separate occasions in three different places and I have found them to be courteous, friendly and professional, not once has any problem arisen.
If someone is getting denied it is because they are flouting the rules, simple.

It sounds like it wouldn't affect the average person visiting or passing through then. The title is wrong, they aren't really tourists being pulled up, they are illegal aliens abusing the tourist visa.Phuket2006 wrote:all the people ( i think there have been all of 3 people reporting hey were stopped now on thai visa and not allowed in ) that have been reporting being detained had more than a few back to back tourist visas or visa exempt entries, no visible income, no return ticket to anywhere and no 20,000 baht in hand.

denied entry: seems too many people are answering the questions wrongly.
often your motives will be questioned on arrival and at various other immigration points with "what you doing in Thailand" said with an accusing insulting tone. so you have to get the answer right or they will obstruct you. The correct answer being along these lines "I come to Thailand to fuck transvestites same as everyone else, Thailand isnt good for anything other than that"
be sure to add the last part or you will still be suspect.
works, try it.
