Would you go to Pattaya?
I went to Bangkok many times and never went to Patpong or Cowboy because I thought they'd be seething shitholes of cheap nasty third world sex tourism. Then I moved to Cambodia and on a trip to Bangkok I was staying right opposite patpong so I went to the night market. The whole place was so tame/lame I thought "fuck is this IT ?????". A few days later went to cowboy and had a great night at Baccara and again was pleasantly surprised. Haven't been back to either but they were nowhere near as seedy as I expected. I guess pattaya would be the same .
If you want truly seedy...P Burgos in manila. Christ that street is truly awful.

Thanks for the reply, interested to hear your thoughts re Vietnam. I agree with your comments re Pattaya.
PenhMan wrote:Pattaya had its horrible traffic blockages. Was sick of it on the Dark Side. After 2 years, I left. Even worse now. But if you look at an earlier post above, you will see how Pattaya has a lot of good services. As I said, it's just easy to live there. I tentatively plan to stay on the beach side, once the Electricity Authority digs up and fills in Central Road in a 3-month project.rl66 wrote:Wow, I'm surprised PenhMan. You've been gearing up for that move for a long time and seemed to pretty much have had your fill of Pattaya judging by your less than complimentary posts over the recent past about the place. I was sort of expecting you to be singing the praises of Vietnam ( Vung Tao ? ) in comparison and was interested as I fancied a trip over there myself never having been. What has made you last only 2 months, what are the downsides out of interest.PenhMan wrote: This is said from my perch in southeastern Vietnam, where I've been for 2 months, which is making me appreciate and miss Pattaya all the more. So much so I renewed my Thai retirement extension a few weeks ago and will very likely return to the Pattaya area this fall because it's just so easy to live there. I won't appreciate the heavy weekend and holiday traffic or tattooed muscle heads all over town. But I can usually avoid most of the unsightliness.
There are Tier 1 and Tier 2 reasons for leaving VT and moving back.
Tier 1: I need to disappear to work on a project. I have two great friends in VT but the temptations are too much. I need to isolate myself. They understand.
Tier 2: Vietnam's raw food quality is very low, confirmed by government food inspectors. Wander into a Lotte Mart or Co-op Mart. You will be appalled by the meat and vegetable sections, especially if you are used to Big C Extra or Villa or Friendship. Shocking difference. Forget about the local markets. Inspectors have found disgusting practices. Then in Pattaya, you have foreigner-owned places such as London Pies and Prime Meats. Very good quality. This is important to me.
Also, the humidity levels are very high in VT. Pattaya's temps and humidity are a bit lower than Bangkok's, and definitely lower than VT's.
To each his own, but Pattaya works on an objective level. I don't love it but, to repeat myself, it's just easy to live there. Expats are spoiled for choice in just about everything. This ease of daily life gives me the time to work.

Yes, not all banks are the same. Its not a country decision, its just a bank preference. I have three banks and two dispense cash after I remove my Card, and the third, HSBC dispenses the card after I have taken my cash. Thankfully, it goes back into the machine, and the bank calls me to come get it.Jamie_Lambo wrote:exactly the same in the UK tooEdwardo wrote:Maybe not all ATMs in the US are the same, but my bank ATMs have a screen that says "Please take your card" with a beeping noise and flashing light. If you don't remove your card, the cash doesn't get dispensed.PenhMan wrote:And I was surprised PR said it's the same in the States as in Thailand. Really?
But I think that same thing happened to me at a bank machine in China, I got my cash, but left my card in the machine. Again, thankfully, the machine took the card back, but it did take a lot more for me to get it back until I started freaking out in the bank the next day. How many people from the same country as I, with the exact same name as on my passport and bank card could there be? I had a taxi waiting for 45 minutes and I was on the way to the airport. The customers were looking at this weird westerner nervously but I did get my card back.
Maybe we should tie a fish line to our cards or something that attaches to our wrists. Like the kind of thing they have for those cards in the casino. lol.

Some strange might be interesting, otherwise I am pretty satiated with a much younger GF who wants to fuck every day already. Probably will be quite content to just roll my eyeballs around and take in the view.
Is it true the Russian Mafia controls that town now?

By the way, I have had a few overnighters in Bangkok before, and at immigration, when asked, I was always in transit, which they were satisfied with. But, if you want to stay a week, do you need a Thai Visa? Sorry if this is such a dumb Q.

So for half assed decent, how much do you budget for a room there? How about the studio apartments?

I always stayed at the Sabai Princess, which is one of several Sabai branded quality hotels run by the same company. They are all in the same area, at the other end of the main bay away from Walking Street, and one block away from the beach. Excellent facilities. Very good rooms and around 900-1400 baht depending on season.Machiavelli wrote:So for half assed decent, how much do you budget for a room there? How about the studio apartments?

Advise u dont set foot in Pattaya,
most westerners get a FREE visa exempt stay for 30 days, sometimes( seldom) ask for a ticket out. But, if you want to stay a week, do you need a Thai Visa? Sorry if this is such a dumb Q.
500-750 will get u a nice hotel (maybe not a pool) Check out Agoda.com.https://www.agoda.com/city/pattaya-th.html?cid=1720055So for half assed decent, how much do you budget for a room there?
Make sure u book a double room (same price as single, but saves hassle if u bring an overnight guest home). You 90 % of the time WONT get a better price as a walk in.Rent a motorcycle for150-200 baht/day

I did not ask the length of a piece of string, or how much is a hotel. I asked how much do you pay for something half assed decent?Alexandra wrote:What does a pineapple cost?

Don't stay in Pataya long or you'll end up like this - drunk and not wanting to show your face while you slur on about a whore (probably) you haven't seen in four years who is the love of your life. Cheap Charlie Chronicles.
