Hundreds missing afer dam fails in Southern Laos
BANGKOK: Hundreds of people are missing and an unknown number believed dead after the collapse of a hydropower dam in southeast Laos, state media reported Tuesday (Jul 24).
The accident happened at a dam in southeastern Attapeu province late Monday, releasing five billion cubic metres of water - more than two million Olympic swimming pools.
The report added that there were "several human lives claimed, and several hundreds of people missing," Laos News Agency said.
Officials have brought boats to help evacuate people in San Sai district of the province as water levels rise after the dam collapsed, ABC Laos news reported.
Several houses in the southern part of the district were also swept away, the report said, and officials in the province put out a call for relief aid for flood victims.
A video posted by the news network on its Facebook page showed villagers stopping to watch fast-flowing water from the side of a river bank.
Environmental rights groups have for years raised concerns about Laos' hydropower ambitions, including worries over the impact of dams on the Mekong River, its flora and fauna and the rural communities and local economies that depend on it.
Several dams are being built or are planned in Laos, an impoverished and landlocked communist country that exports most of its hydropower energy to neighbouring countries like Thailand.
The US$1.2 billion dam is part of a project by Vientiane-based Xe Pian Xe Namnoy Power Company, or PNPC, a joint venture formed in 2012.
Among the companies involved in the project according to the Laos News Agency are Thailand's Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding, South Korea's Korea Western Power and the state-run Lao Holding State Enterprise.
The 410 megawatt capacity dam was supposed to start commercial operations by 2019, according to the venture's website.
The project planned to export 90 per cent of its electricity to energy hungry Thailand and the remaining amount was to be offered up on the local grid.

cant see that it wouldnt be part of the network supplying cambodian electricity
they perpetuate this myth in order to continue funding the vast number of foreign NGOs who think that it just too fine a place to have to leave, for example a bowl of noodle soup in a ordinary no frills shop house is going to set you back 20000 kip in vientiane which is about 80 baht, you aint never going to pay anywhere near that in thailand or cambodia in a similar placein Laos, an impoverished and landlocked communist country

I somewhat doubt the last part of this statement. The feasibility study for the hydroelectric project was completed in November 2008. Construction of the project began in February 2013 and commercial operations were expected to begin in 2018.

That's terrible news, and it could be far worse than we know just yet. The strength of the rivers here is incredible, I'm surprised that anyone even attempts to harness that power.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
To be fair, nobody could have expected and planned for "heavy rains" in this part of the world as part of the dam design and construction. It must have been one of those black swan events or something.
According to "Wiki" it was an "overflow dam" below the main dam that failed.
The dam collapse occurred around 8pm[7] on Monday 23 July, in Sanamxay district, and caused immediate flash flooding through the villages[1] of Yai Thae, Hinlad, Mai, Thasengchan, Tha Hin, and Samong.[7] Homes, roads and bridges were swept away.[10] The portion of the dam that collapsed was reported to be a saddle dam, described as " an auxiliary structure used to hold water beyond what is held by the main dam".[2] The CEO of one of the companies involved stated that "[it] was fractured and the water had leaked to the downstream area and down to the Xe-Pian River which is about five kilometres from the dam".[11] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attapeu_dam_collapse

This isn't recent. I seen this on Facebook a while back. With the recent flooding in Japan I have seen many Khmer posting pics or videos that are actually from the tsunami years ago and not of recent floods there. The snow in the mountains and people wearing heavy jackets is kind of a dead giveaway.pedros wrote:I have no idea if this is genuine, but if it is (and looks real enought), brrrrrrr
