I only saw one bia hoi shop from Ha Tien to Bo Y border. It's more of a northern thing so no idea if they've died out or not.
On the subject of beer, I'm in Myanmar now where suprisingly thai beers, Leo and Chang are cheaper than Myanmar beer.
Guesthouses seem like bottom of the pile as far as value go's though going by my first few days. 20k kyat will get you a shithole room in Kawkareik.
Maybe Thailand has alot going for it after all.
I may have a rethink.

I am a beer lover, not a snob. To me, all the Asian 5% lagers taste the same. I have challenged people to blind tastings in the past, and none of them could tell what they were drinking with a choice of Angkor, Anchor, Tiger. The exception was Ganzberg, which is just vile.

I think I could pick out Tiger but for the others I’d be much less confident.Hanno wrote:I am a beer lover, not a snob. To me, all the Asian 5% lagers taste the same. However, I could certainly tell the difference the next morning. Whilst sitting on the throne with a splitting headache.
Angkor kills me. Anchor, Cambodia, Kingdom & Tiger have no significant after effects.

I didn't know about "Bia Hoi" until I saw this thread, thanks to ya'll for mentioning it. I went out and found some Bia Hoi last night and was surprised to find that it's just $0.50 for a liter of beer. They have a slightly better tasting beer for $2.00 per liter. You can believe I got wasted! No digestion problems or sickness aside from a normal hangover.

it will keep you going and goingHanno wrote:No balls is right, as long as the government can pay for an army of street sweepers, it does not look to bad. A little different away from the city centers and tourist areas though. Like all Asians, Vietnamese are terrible litter bugs. Having driven in both Cambodia and Vietnam fort years, I personally find traffic in Vietnam a lot more dangerous than in Cambodia.
No argument about the food, it is indeed "thom ngon" (as long as you ignore all the additives and chemicals that come with the food, including ground-up batteries in the coffee).

I would be happier in Viet Nam. I have more interest in learning their language and I want to live in Communist countries. I prefer China over Viet Nam. I love Chinese food, can speak Chinese and can blend in with the locals if I am living in the Xinjiang region as I look Turkish.

I dont really like it here.
just paid 400$ for a trc and im way over qualified, notarised and translated and authenticated. wages r crap
Very surprised if you cud stay in a nga nghi/ guesthouse for 100k. its not allowed generally in VN. certainly not in the highlands.
trash everywhere, and thats just the people, lots of rubbish too lol
its quite scenic but some people r even worse than chinx and thais. Ive been living amongst the little fishhead twats for years and VNese r some of , if not, the worst.
Bia toi gives u the shits but so does the fibreless slimy tasteless shite noodles and dioxiined rice and sewer oil anyhow.

.
2016/2017 I toured all of Vietnam by bicycle , eight months in total and spent 50 % of my nights in Nga Nghi places especially in the highlands and smaller towns where there were no other choices. Cost usually 100 - 150k dong.
I have to agree with the op that Vietnam is the best value in SE Asia by far. The accommodation is outstanding especially when compared to Malaysia and Indonesia. The Saigon Special and 333 are amongst the best beers in the region, although there are some really crap beers too especially in central Vietnam and beer Hoi is undrinkable in my opinion. The food is probably the healthiest in the region too , lots of raw veg and leaves and a lot less oily than some others. Quite easily my favourite country so far.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

I'm with "Horace" on this, the poster "An Ass" is talking bollocks.1)It's Bia Hoi anyway,2)of course you can stay in a Nga Nhgi for about 100.000VND.I've lived in Thailand for 4 years,Cambodia for a year and now Vietnam for 8+ years.Vietnam is cheaper, cleaner and friendlier than either Thailand or Cambodia. The paperwork is getting easier to live here, unlike both Thailand and Vietnam. As far as wages go,if you are properly qualified, can speak, read and write English properly-no abbreviations and mis-spellings(An ass please note!)- in teaching the wages are good, private tuition bumps it up considerably, and if you take in to account the lower cost of living,it's much better than the other countries.
The only "Western style" bar in Ha Tien

I’ve stayed in “nhà nghỉ” all over Vietnam for 23 years.... And my salary is not too bad.

Vietnam's reckless driving makes for the terrible stat of 60 road deaths per day while Cambodia is around 7. Mind you, Vietnam pop. 5/6x that of Cambodia's.Hanno wrote:Having driven in both Cambodia and Vietnam fort years, I personally find traffic in Vietnam a lot more dangerous than in Cambodia...
