I bet few people outside of SEA are aware of the insurgency in southern Thailand. We've mentioned it a few times, and I remember that Horace had a wonderful time biking through the area.
This article discusses how the military has kind of lost interest in the problem and been putting it aside since the junta took control. It appears to be getting worse, not better.
It's a good article with a lot of info.

This area has been a problem for decades if not longer.
I started visiting Thailand back in the late 70s and was warned by our Thai friends never to go to this region due to Muslim terrorists.
Nothing ever changes.

Sleep, those little slices of death — how I loathe them.

I believe it was reported on a lot more a few years back, and there is probably a certain amount of suppression of bad news in the "Land of Smiles". For example the war against the CPT (Communist Party of Thailand) in the northeast in the 60s-70s was never reported on much and is barely known about in the wider world. It helps to have the right allies sometimes.

I didn't bother to read the article as it bored me after the first sentences and a quick scroll down revealed it to be too long.
I loved the south, the food, the people, the lack of tourists, everything. I never felt in danger and got the impression that insurgency is the wrong word. From looking at the photos which were plastered billboard size outside police stations and army checkpoints and such like that it is only about a dozen young men who are the insurgents!

Visited the south often, never had a problem, that was around 2000. There was a bomb in Hat Yai linked to the separatists who want Yala , Pathani and Narathiwat back. To be fair, these provinces were once part of Malaysia, back around 1900, iirc. Predominantly Muslim population and very different vibe to the rest of Thailand, but not in bad way. Different foods available, great curries, rotis, nasi goring. Not as outwardly friendly as other areas until you get to know them, but never rudeTheGrimReaper wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:01 pmThis area has been a problem for decades if not longer.

The beaches are not as nice as on the Phuket side of Thailand, but they are way less crowded, sometimes deserted. We were the only people there when we went.
