According to Vietnam's new regulations, if someone is found driving under the influence of alcohol, they will be banned from the road for 22 -24 months driving and fined $1,297. The law, implemented since the beginning of January, has seen Vietnamese traffic police fine 6,279 drivers and collected more than 21 billion VND ($ 907,750).
Armed forces and civil servants caught drunk behind the wheel will receive harsher punishments.
Le Sun Duc, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Public Security (MoPS), said at a conference in Hanoi on Monday January 16, that 322 traffic accidents from 1 to January 15, killed 249 people and injured 158.
He said since the new rules were being enforced, the number of accidents had dropped 9%, while the death toll dropped by 13 %, compared to the previous two weeks.

If I were Le Sun Duc I would concentrate my efforts on more important and achievable targets such as encouraging Viet girls to drive their motos in Daisy Dukes.
Ideally topless, but I think that might raise the accident rate.

Let's see how long they can keep it up. This has been tried before. I worked in Can Tho when the government there received breathalyzers from the Australian government. One of the first guys they snagged was some big-wig; the breathalyzers were never seen again after that.
As a side note: bars and restaurants are recording a 30%-drop in revenue since the the crackdown.
