Banking ... again
I have been trying to open a bank account here in Cambodia (Kampomg Som) with no luck and wondering is anyone has any tips. I have lease (and passport of course) , English only between me and the Barang company that owns the apartment I am in and not stamped by the Sangkat, (whomever that is) or the Police. Apparently to do this it would cost me $25 for beer money ? The company I lease off gave me a letter saying I am a consultant, that didn't wash with the bank either, and fair enough it's dodgy. All of this is with Acleda.
The landlord suggested going with ANZ Royal (I own ANZ shares back in Aus and would ever deal with them at home but realise this is a cambo JV that will be different, hopefully) as he has all his banking with them and they will do it no problems as he has done the same thing before. Why I don't have a proper lease was one question, that aside... I am not sure what bank is better for larger amounts, I mean compared to the average monthly wage over here (ie 5 to 6 figures) IS there a suggested bank ? Last time I asked in here, it seemed to be ANZ was regarded with some loathing and to use Acleda, does this sentiment still hold or is this purely from the disgruntled few.
Acleda suggested a "Certificate of Residency" from Sokkah (where / who is that, how much does that cost)
Suggestions ?

I have had a number of problems with ANZ which led me to ask for some suggestions on this forum. Someone suggested ABA. I have switched to them and I am very satisfied. Opening an account was very easy.

I just went to ANZ Royal and they said no, fuck off (I have paraphrased of course). Apparently you need a visa with longer then 6 months.. or so they say... the irony of this is of course, I have 5 months left and have been screwed around for the last month trying to open an account. If I had a stamped lease from the get go, I would have had 6 months left. I didn't want to get another visa yet, as I will leave the country for about 3 - 6 months when this visa expires, before coming back.... I have a letter from my employer (false letter from valid employer)
I assume all banks will say no to the 4 months visa left ?
How long does it take to get a Visa extension in PP (is there someone quick I can use) ? It takes extra time in Kampong Som as they have to send the passport up to PP and back.
PS Can I ask why ANZ Giblet ? They seem almost universally harangued on here .

Try Canadia. Not exactly sure their criteria, but I didn't show them a lease or a work contract. I definitely had a 1 year visa though...

I only had 4 months left on my (1 year) visa when I set up my account. I'd recommend going in and attempting to look like a normal member of society, if possible, and trying again. They are definitely trying to get more "upmarket" clients these days. I went with ANZ because it seemed like the easiest bank to use to receive international transfers without having to pay intermediary banks. Plus I like their color scheme.Hoopharted wrote:I just went to ANZ Royal and they said no, fuck off (I have paraphrased of course). Depends on the purpose of the bank account over here. If it is for more advanced banking products such as savings, loans, international remittance, blah, blah, then you've got plenty of choice with ANZR, ABA, Maybank, etc.
Said it before in another thread, but if you simply want to get a no frills (hassle) account, then you can get a WING account for about $2.5 (depends on where you buy/open it) which gives you a safe place to put money (money is actually held in ANZR), a shedload of access points to your cash, including all ANZR ATMs if you don't want any interaction with those weird Khmer folks. Foreigners can open an account with just a passport - no visa, employment or residency checks. No monthly fee, minimum balance is $0, access to your account via mobile to pay bills, top your phone up, etc. Sucks for loans/savings/international remittance though!

By this I assume you mean dress like many ex pat locals; in scruffy "shpants" (to quote Arj Barker) , sans shirt, with flip flops ? I was dressed in what I would call "smart casual" and had several thousand dollars in cash I wanted to deposit into the account. Perhaps I should have replaced my shoes with flip flops, put a lit cig. in the corner of my mouth and reeked of beer to be taken seriously ?giblet wrote: I'd recommend going in and attempting to look like a normal member of society, if possible, and trying again.
I will try again in PP when I am there tomorrow.
I regard ANZ (A for Australia) as the worst of the big 4 Australian banks in terms of customer service (back in Aus.) and was led to believe their JV partner, the Royal group, had a less then auspicious provinence. So dealing with them left me feeling a little uneasy but I am not aware of the Banking minutiae here in Cambodge so you have a point, perhaps I should have considered their colour scheme.giblet wrote: Plus I like their color scheme.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply anything about you personally. I have no idea what you look like or how you dress or whether you have a giant dreadlock beehive on your head, I was just suggesting that based on ANZ Royal's recent attempts to get rid of all of their poor clients, you might have better luck if you look wealthy.Hoopharted wrote:By this I assume you mean dress like many ex pat locals; in scruffy "shpants" (to quote Arj Barker) , sans shirt, with flip flops ? I suspect that most large businesses in town have a "less than auspicious provenance" so I chose to go with color scheme. I find the blues calming.Hoopharted wrote:I regard ANZ (A for Australia) as the worst of the big 4 Australian banks in terms of customer service (back in Aus.) and was led to believe their JV partner, the Royal group, had a less then auspicious provinence. Thanks... I had considered them but because I use them already I was looking for an alternate for redundancy purposes. I may try them anyway, see if they pull the same thing with the Visa.cambod wrote:Try Canadia. Not exactly sure their criteria, but I didn't show them a lease or a work contract. That's all I had to do too. In fact as my boss doesn't live in our town my assistant wrote the letter and I signed it.giblet wrote:When I opened an account with ANZ recently I don't think they asked for a copy of my lease/residency proof. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Anyone know what the name of the "regular" bank account is at Acleda? I can't find one on their site that doesn't require a minimum deposit of under $1k, so I'm sure I'm looking at the wrong ones.
For Canadia, what are the requirements to open a new account? On this page it says the opening deposit requirement is $200 and also $500. They will issue you actual checks, though. I didn't know people used them here.

I think my Acleda account is called a savings account. I think it required only $50 depost. They might have increased it to $100 more recently.
