Table of bank and MFI deposit rates?
I've trying to find a quick and easy comparison table of the various bank and MFI interest rates on deposit accounts? Does such a thing exist? It might be interesting to 440ers to have such a thing regularly updated and maybe attached as a 'sticky' thread at the top of this forum.
If such a thing doesn't exist, I will try to develop one myself and see if the powers that be are prepared to fix it to the top of this forum.

Good idea. We do need a sticky on that subject. Not only the rates but the various experiences and recommendations.

Seen one before but not sure if it was on the public domain. I think Kredit is near the top though and no issue with large deposits.

But measuring Cambodia’s MFIs against their return on investment is dangerous, according to independent economist Srey Chanthy.
“With this, there could be a rush. Just like a gold rush, ELC rush, logging rush – an MFI rush,” he said.
Chanthy said that MFIs had a social obligation to fulfill, they should be strengthening their services offered to Cambodia’s poor, who he said were far from sophisticated entrepreneurs.
“They need to check on the bankability of their borrowers, not just their backgrounds and assets,” he said. “They need to equip their borrowers with skills in entrepreneurship, provide advisory support to their borrowers on business investment analysis and planning.”
Chanthy said the cost of borrowing in Cambodia was too high when compared to rates of “semi-formal” lenders in Thailand and Vietnam, which can be as low as 9 per cent.
“If the AEC [ASEAN Economic Community] is realised and Cambodian borrowers can cross the borders to borrow, and if banks in Vietnam and Thailand had enough money and were permitted to lend, I wonder what will happen with these MFIs? They will have to lower their rates, lose customers or shutdown,” he said.

Rather typically, SCC selecting quoted part of a story, the whole thrust of which is that the Cambodian MFI sector is perhaps the best performing and most transparent in the world, according to Mekong Strategic Partners in its annual survey of MicroFinance Institutions.
View it as a word of cautionary warning. Isn't that what spurred this thread in the first place? See how the market rates are going and see when to pull out?scobienz wrote:Rather typically, SCC selecting quoted part of a story, the whole thrust of which is that the Cambodian MFI sector is perhaps the best performing and most transparent in the world, according to Mekong Strategic Partners in its annual survey of MicroFinance Institutions.

It's a good idea and if alanclarke or anyone else has time to put it together I will make it a sticky. It was interesting to read in SCC's piece that Cambodian MFI's charge borrowers around 30% per annum, and to see that as being significantly lower than most rates of other MFIs around the world. I suppose it is much lower than a local moneylender would charge.

I will try to find some time to do it this week. I'll keep it simple and limit it to 12 deposit rates, otherwise it will start to get too complicated.

As they used to say on Blue Peter "Here's one I prepared earlier..."

Just a very basic spreadsheet (ODS format) from a couple of months ago when I was considering spreading some money over a few MFIs. It has hardcoded rates for Visionfund, Prasac, Kredit and Sathapana. I was going to extend it to other providers and get it to screen scrape the current rates. Then my circumstances changed and it all became academic.
Yellow boxes are input fields, green boxes are outputs. There's no error checking, no sanity checking. WHT is withholding tax rate, everything else is pretty self explanatory.
Someone could use it as a starting point for something more useful, or it could give you a rough idea of the returns that are possible. It's free for use under GPL v3, comes with no warranty of any kind, blah blah blah.

Very useful walkjivefly, although a couple of them seem out of date. Prasac are offering 8% for USD for 12 months, and 9.75% for riel for the same period. Similarly visionfund's 12 month rates are a little higher at the moment.

The rates were correct a couple of months ago. My version of LibreOffice has a bug in the link function so automatically getting the current rates from the net wasn't possible. Hence only 4 providers and possibly out of date rates. And then I did something else with the money anyway.
It's a starting point for people to build on. At least noone yet has complained about it not being an xls sheet.

AMK goes up to 12.5% for long term fixed deposits. Not sure if it is on their brochure or if you have to haggle for it.
12% officially for a 3 year term in Khmer Riel. Sure 12.5% is possible for a large sum...(and certainly possible for jackrossi as he has the gift of the gab and is a bit of a geezer)jackrossi wrote:AMK goes up to 12.5% for long term fixed deposits. Personally I take 11% (rack rate) for 18 months term as 36 months is just so long to wait.
