PPP has a story today about a survey that Cambodians are frustrated at the levels of service the banking and MFI sector provides, with the main focus being on poor quality staff not understanding what products are available. I think we've all experienced the 'cannot' response from bank tellers in branches, even Head Office branches in the city. I can't imagine what it will be like in the provinces.
Conversely, some aspects are pretty good. I was impressed - although not happy - to have a call from a teller recently telling me that the interest rate on an ABA term deposit I hold was reducing. I don't recall that happening in any other market I've banked in.
While Cambodia’s crowded banking sector has enjoyed strong growth, the majority of consumers surveyed have cited dissatisfaction with banking services as a main impediment for the sector’s confidence and future growth.
A representative survey presented at the eighth annual Banking and Microfinance Awards on Friday showed that 70 per cent of consumers believed that overall service was lacking. The study focused not only on day-to-day branch service – which scored low for staff quality – but also ATM infrastructure and digital banking capabilities.
“Banks need to serve the people and teach them how to spend, invest and save smarter,” said Tam Le, CEO of International Data Group ASEAN, the event’s organiser.
While the survey said that call centre services could help alleviate some of the frustrations, most people claimed that when they entered a branch with a particular question, the staff was unable to provide assistance.
“Branch services are not knowledgeable,” said Le.
“For example, if a customer wants to upgrade a card from debit to credit to increase online payments, the customer service doesn’t have the answers for that process.”
Staff quality was not meeting customer expectations, Le told bankers attending the conference in Phnom Penh.

I went to the cashpoint at ABA this morning and when I tried to withdraw some money it said "insufficient funds". Not sure if that’s me of them.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.

It's a growing, developing service in a third world nation. So, no surprise. Still . . .Branch services are not knowledgeable,” said Le.
1. No one at Canadia Bank could explain to me why my Canadian ATM card would not work when it worked in every other bank's ATM machines.
2. No one at Canadia Bank could tell me if wire transfers from Canada could be received and processed.
3. ABA Bank is the only one that I know of that does not provide foreign exchange rates on its web site. When I pointed out to them in an email that their currency converter was outright wrong, they pulled the converter from the web site. Nothing has taken its place in the 3-4 months since.
So, yeah, lots of education needed.
