"local" credit cards
"local" credit cards
My local bank(s) still do not offer credit cards but at least on is now working on it. But it will probably take another year until they are good to go.
I use a non-Cambodian credit card and do not like the zero interest on my term deposit I need to maintain to secure the credit balance on the card. Moreover, when I use the card for online purchases mastercard sends a security code to my cell phone. This is nice on the one hand but bad on the other as I do not always have access to my local phone provider when traveling in Europe or the U.S. etc. In other words, the card is pretty useless in such situations.
I did my reading on the forum and I m thinking now of getting a Cambodian issued cc. I have sufficient funds to secure the card and one year visas in my passport for some time back. I also looked at some bank websites.
What would be a suitable card for me? Considering that I travel, make online purchases (tickets and the like), interest on term deposit, fees.
Some input based on experience would be very helpful and appreciated.
Thanks!

Get a Visa debit card instead. As you already know, the "credit" cards here don't actually offer credit, so are pointless. I use the ANZ Visa debit card that comes with my current account and have used it all around the world without issue. Also they don't do any nonsense with SMS security codes and what not.
Lots of people seems to be very happy with ABA so they might be worth a look too.

Can't you have the deposit in a high interest fixed account and therefore have a high limit on the card while maintaining little on the attached account itself ? On a debit card I believe the balance needs to meet the request.starkmonster wrote:Get a Visa debit card instead. As already said, get a Debit card, I have Visa debit card from ABA which I use for online payments and withdrawing cash overseas.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

No, you have to maintain a fixed deposit and that's the limit of the card, they every month you can run down the deposit, then get a bill like a regular credit card to clear the balance, they even fine you if you are late in clearing the balance of your own f*ing deposit. If you want a higher limit you have to do some paperwork and deposit more money. It's a completely retarded system.Barang_doa_slae wrote:Can't you have the deposit in a high interest fixed account and therefore have a high limit on the card while maintaining little on the attached account itself ? Visa debit is much better, if there's enough money in the account the payment gets authorized, simple as that.

I don't think they'll give you a credit card but ABA will give you a VISA debit card which you can use worldwide. They have decent mobile and internet banking to go with it too. As it's a debit card you'll need to keep more in your account than you're planning to spend but it doesn't sound like that will be an issue for you.
Possibly the same is true of Acleda, ANZ and some of the other banks but I don't have any experience with them.

Thanks for the replies.
I am aware that the credit card actually works as like a debit card. It's the same situation with my cc from another bank in SEA. Difference is the zero interest on my deposit and savings account aside from a 36 USD fee and endless and slow banking procedures and hours in the bank. I once I asked if they have a pillow for me. 5-6 people need to sign up on anything and surely at least one cannot be found (during work hours) and needs to be called in. Enuff of that crap.
For security reasons, I would only have a small term deposit connected with the card, say 2-3K USD. It would be a nightmare if hacked or thrifty store employee could clean out larger sums.
So far ABA and ANZ get the thumbs up including for international use. What about Canadia? I m thinking about picking the place with the highest interest rate on the term deposit and the savings account needed to covering the bills. Obviously I need to calculate the higher income from interest vs the perhaps higher cost in maintaining the card.
I often read that a credit card is needed on certain transactions or that I have to show a credit card at the hotel. Would a debit card make a difference = make problems? I ask this perhaps stupid looking question as I had, so far, always complied by producing a cc.
Visa does not have that terrible verification code by phone system?
I also read, here on the forum, that the banks call up your home in case you do a strange looking purchase, say in Europe. In my case I would not be able to answer the call as I am in Europe at that moment.
All info is greatly appreciated as this is a very important issue and it is perhaps easy to imagine the kind of nightmare such problems can create when on the road.
THanks again.

To be safe, I normally only keep a max $100 on my debit card, if I need more I just tansfer from my other account, which is not linked to the debit card, via the ABA banking app or internet banking.
Most hotels that require you to provide a credit card will also accept a Visa/Mastercard debit card, I've never had any problems.

This is what I do as well.
A few years ago I had some fraudulent activity on my debit card and the ABA Branch Manager suggested this.
My current setup (with the 'other ' bank) is this: I have a savings account and each month the cc bill is automatically deducted from that account. On average I keep 2-300 USD in that account.
From you posts I understand, if not mistaken, that your setup is different. No automatic deduction. You transfer each month the needed amount. How does this work? Does the bank email/mail you the bill whereupon you transfer? Or you estimate the approximately needed amount and transfer it on your own before the due date? My 'other' bank sends me a monthly statement with the account activities and balance.
I ask this seemingly nerdy question as my current system is working well given the fact that I travel regularly and wont be around on the given dates. Added to that I m very much scared of internet banking after having been hacked more than once.
Having compared the ANZ, Canadia, and ABA websites I find that ANZ is a bit out of its mind demanding a minimum 10K USD deposit to start business with with them (term deposit) while offering a rather low interest rate. ABA looks to me the best deal right now - even more so in view of the positive feed back here. All very helpful. Thanks again.

Do you understand the difference between Credit & Debit cards? I think you may be getting a little confused.
Go into ABA, open 2 accounts, only one of which is linked to the Debit card which you apply for, keep minimal funds in that account and just transfer funds into it as required.
There are no monthly bill because debit cards are like an ATM card, but have the same functionality as a credit card without actually using credit (it is your money...not money you are borrowing from the bank).
Not sure if my explanation is very clear?
