Not sure what rate they used to convert prices, but from now on, all prices are shown in KHR, with NO counterpart in USD
Don't know if it is some government request to continue promoting the riel and if it 's similar in other """""""""""""supermarkets""""""""""""""""
However, when you pay, you can find out that the exchange rate is 4150KHR/1USD
Still don't understand what is the benefit for people getting their salary in KHR for this new "thing", except being raped on & on & on & on.
Just like at the gas station, when you ask for 2 liters, at the price of 3000KHR/L = 6000KHR, which should be 1,5 USD and you can see on the pump the price of 1,46 being displayed.
As long as there will not be a static rate to convert USD to KHR, people paying in KHR will always lose.
No wonder nobody trust the national currency.
Lucky Supermarket, all prices are now in khmer riel
The receipts also only in Khmer, have to watch for the prcies of things as they scan.
Example, red wine was on offer for $4.75, checkout price was $9.50.
"Sorry sir". Another time a small jar of mayo rang up to $12. Watch them like a hawk.

This is nothing new for them

Yes, I always thought they were shit. I'm surprised they have survived so long with newer competition.

That’s outrageous! I hate being raped on by getting it 4 cents CHEAPER than I want to pay.
Often i demand to pay the higher price on principal.
Any thoughts on Thai Huot supermarkets? I've heard they are a good place to buy.upstage2 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:04 pmNot sure what rate they used to convert prices, but from now on, all prices are shown in KHR, with NO counterpart in USD

ALL supermarkets are extortionately priced.
They vary in attitudes toward sell by dates, freshness and the storage of frozen/defrosted/refrozen goods from pretty bad to terrible.

I would say you can make most western dishes with what is available here. The best deal by far is Makro if you go big. Despite the lack of certain ingredients, you can hide it with a little garlic and onion powder, paprika and branded products. You'd probably be a snob if your chef couldn't prepare anything for you here in a timely manner. But the source is important. Quality products are hard to find by the average market shopper.
When I lived in Cambodia, most of my food shopping was in the local markets. That's not to say I did not visit markets with Chinese and Western products. I spent a few years in India and learned many northern and southern recipes which I love. I prefer fresh veggies, rice, Indian, and the occasional Italian dish. And last but not least... an attractive Khmer lady from time to time,)
Which other country on earth has a static rate for the USD?
The Pound changes, afaik, so does every other major currency.
Try buying ANYTHING in Thailand with USD, they'll laugh at you.
Not sure why anybody would be surprised that a sovereign nation would promote, even demand, the use of its own currency within its borders.
Very colonial attitude
