Herein, I think, lies the problem. No matter how spanking new the facilities, nor how well equipped, if they are going to staff it with the usual locally-trained doctors, then punters will still be playing Russian Roulette. Short of Intensive Care Chenda Polyclinic is the best in my book. They have an operating room and excellent an excellent surgeon. They have quality doctors and reasonable prices.

Never go to the royal phnom penh hospital. imcompetent doctors. my brother almost lost his toes there
untill we took him to bangkok, where he cured and in 5 minutes knew the real reason of the dying toes,
smokers legs. yesterday I meet another traveller who went there having a bacteria from Laos.
put him up with all kind of unneccesary tests and four hours later got a bill of $700.
a ticket to Bangkok is the best thing to do, if you want good medical aid!!!!

I've got mixed experiences with the Royal PP.
One (I believe GP, it was at night) doc saw my daughter twice. He was competent, I think his diagnose was right, and he was great with kids. Recommended.
A children's doc there saw my daughter one time, great doc too. Careful examination and he seemed skilled and knowledgeable. Recommended.
My wife's son went to a urologist there. Typical Khmer doc, unfriendly, non-explaining, and promised to get back to us if the result of the culture was odd and change of medication was needed. Culture result was e-mailed to me and it turned out be a fungal rather than a bacterial infection - so change of medication was needed. Never heard anything back from the doc - despite his promise, so not recommended.

1. Absurd waiting times, despite us booking well in advance - what should have been routine checkups and ultrasounds had a mean time of 2 hours end to end. Waiting time was probably 65% of that. I could not determine how the waiting room was being managed. I may be wrong, but I got the impression it seemed to operate on a first come, first serve basis. For reference, the mean end to end time at Fertility Clinic in 178 was about 45 minutes.Kachang wrote:More specific?Petrol Head wrote:Mrs PH and I had universally bad experiences at Royal Phnom Penh, too.
2. No coordination, or at least poorly coordinated communication with their counterparts at Bangkok Hospital. Anticipating this we had sent RPP the pertinent details of our Thai doctors beforehand too.
3. Rubbish email response time generally by RPP.
4. Techs operate in a very linear manner, diagnostics clearly not being used to full potential as I have mentioned in other threads. Became abundantly clear every time we went back to Thailand.
5. Doctors do not explain clearly why X is causing Y and/or why Z is the best course of action.
6. Settling of bill and coordinating with insurer was farcical and took about 3 times longer than Thai counterparts.
Ridiculous. Initially we hoped there could be continuity between RPP and BGH as we were always going to deliver at BGH, but didn't want to fly every weekend. Actually we gave RPP more leeway because of the relationship between the two.
I would say RPP is more expensive than other hospitals in PP too, maybe more than BGH itself but I honestly can't remember.
In the end we said fuck it and did the back half of the pregnancy as a mixture of Fertility Clinic and monthly flights to BGH.

Seems experiences at Royal are mixed.
I had a very good experience there one evening last week. I walked in with very fast irregular heartbeat - atrial fibrillation (the bane of my life).
I was sent straight to the receiving area, placed in a bed and connected up to various machines by two competent male nurses.
First (Thai) doctor was ok but a few minutes later an Indian female cardiologist arrived and took control. Very competent and knowledgable. One IV, a few machines and two hours later I was back in sinus rhythm.
The most regular attendee was a guy dressed like a comedian complete with bow tie. He was from the accounts department and appeared at regular intervals to let me know how my bill was mounting up. Lol.
I also got an impression of machines being wheeled in and used just to boost the bill. Did I really need a chest X-Ray etc?
They tried to convince me to stay overnight, but at a mere $1,700 per night in the ICU I declined.
The cardiologist then tried to get me to stay, saying my condition could reappear but I got the strong impression she was being leaned on to increase revenue.
So I thought it was good medically but definitely geared to also making money.
I really think it's not so much which hospital is good or not, but which individual doctor you chance upon. Perhaps we should start a list of recommended doctors by name and speciality..

Misses recently had surgery and a short stay at Royal. Was a positive experience with doctor and nursing staff.
When checked out a phone charger was left behind and later the same day the cleaning staff couldn't find it. Pathetic that the cleaning lady stole a charger but we need to be more responsible for our belongings.

I found waiting times to be pretty short overall. One issue is I would like them to be more proactive with the insurance companies. They submit the email however upon non-receipt of immediate reply they seek a deposit from you.
On 2 occasions I was able to call and receive reply in under 20 minutes. Why couldn't the staff call the insurance company?
