I agree with you Gav, I just wanted to give the nutrition student enough to start posting crap. Checking out the omega 3 claim assures me someone shouldn't wait 3 months for them.

Uncle Monty, could you please elaborate on which specific aspects of which specific studies on omega 3 for depression you found to be scientifically unsound?
GavinMac, I agree that anyone suffering depression should seek prompt treatment and I admire the OP's courage and vulnerability in asking for advice here. I don't agree with your sticking labels on the OP such as 'totally bonkos'.
If you're more interested in education that argument, perhaps we can meet when I get to Phnom Penh and I'll tell you what led to me deciding to become a nutritionist - if you're open-minded enough to listen.

You. You're a student, which means you have probably read a few books.diamond lady wrote:Uncle Monty, could you please elaborate on which specific aspects of which specific studies on omega 3 for depression you found to be scientifically unsound?

It is extremely irresponsible of you to start offering advice to someone who might really be quite low and needs to see a seasoned professional with many successful cases under his or her belt.
Shut up now.

Bizarro says,
Source: http://bizarrocomics.com/2013/02/02/vro ... eath-poop/I like pharmacy cartoons because the modern obsession with pharmaceuticals is a fascinating subject. Most of us would rather take a handful of drugs made of god-knows-what from god-knows-where than rely on a good diet and exercise or a natural remedy. ...
(In the interest of full disclosure, and so you don’t think I’m some sort of health snob, I’ve been on antidepressants for years and will be for the rest of my life. I’ve tried many times to find non-pharmaceutical answers to my depression but have failed.)
If depression is a result of a chemical imbalance, a chemical solution is required. Just like insulin for diabetes. Of course other therapies can help correct that imbalance but not as quickly.
The Earth is degenerating these days. Bribery and corruption abound.

Cucumbers. Yes.
Washed down with a litre of Gordon's Gin.
Sorted in no time.

As for the link posted above, citing one review of 11 other studies in which the conclusion was 'evidence is inconclusive' is not a sound, scientific basis for claiming something does not work.
And it seems the authors of the review cited would agree as their final comment was that further (better designed) investigation is warranted:
"Robust prospective cohort studies specially designed to study the association between diet and depression risk are needed."

Interesting post so far:
Various opinions offered and hidden amongst them a few truths.
If you are head fucked in any way at all, the first port of call must be to manage the chemicals you are putting into your body.
Including grog, weed, other drugs and even the basic food groups.
If you don't manage these then taking other forms of medication will not be as effective as one would hope.
So I would not be too harsh on the poster suggesting that you need to get the balance of what you eat/consume correct.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

That's cool! Is "studying nutrition" like a weekend course or what?
I suggest you find better quotes (or better yet, scientific links that back you up!) to share when people question the seriousness of your field.
Honestly, any field that you have to spew out some cliched-out nursery rhymes to prove your validity is going to be a tough sell. But I'm sure you'll start getting better at rebuttals as everyone and their great-great grandma will question you.
Personally, I wouldn't quote silly sayings when people ridicule/question your field, it makes it look even more like a novelty new age hobby.
I've NEVER met a doctor that had to say something like, "Well, I'm a doctor, and you know what they say, 'a doctor a day keeps the apples away!' Wait, I think I got that wrong..."
I'm going to start using this when I introduce myself as a teacher and people spit out their drinks laughing and start rolling around on the floor until they spill their martinis all over the place:
" It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." -Albert Einstein-

The quotes were intended as food for thought, dear Cambod, nothing more.
I'm not going to spend time trawling Google Scholar finding studies that show nutrition has positive effects on 'mental illness' - these studies do exist, I've read plenty of them, and happily, research is ongoing. In my experience, I could post all the links in the world to back myself and my future profession up, but people would keep arguing because people love to argue online and throw knives instead of facts, and some people love to hate on holistic healthcare, even in the face of all evidence (or complete lack of personal experience). So hence, I am not going to waste my time.
Furthermore, I don't actually see genuine desire to discuss science in most of this thread, mainly because I don't think there is basic understanding. For example, there doesn't seem to be basic understanding among some of the naysayers here of what 'essential' means in the term 'essential fatty acid' (omega 3 is one of these, just so ya know).
Statistically, the gender and age range that appears to be represented by the naysayers are not typically keen consumers of holistic healthcare, and don't tend to understand what it is actually about. So I am not surprised by the reactions here. Seen it all many times before.
I am going to leave this thread now because I think it was great the OP came here asking for the advice she asked for, and I hope she finds treatment options that work for her. I have no desire to be present any longer for what is seemingly only going to be personal attacks, and no science.
Science is cool. Sharing stories about illness and what worked for you is way cool. Seeking advice and working on your health is extremely cool.
But personal attacks are boring.

Obviously people need to find a balance.
Like you said, you've noticed this might not be the best place to have a scientific argument.
I want a free consultation when you get here too!

For sure we can have a consult, that would be great. But no freebie for you, as pennance for yor online brattishness. You'd have to at least shout me one of those Garage burgers I keep hearing so much about.
(And now I am officially leaving this thread....have an assignment on the digestive system to finish and a kitty cat to smooch with....and the last episode of Breaking Bad (for now!) to watch!)
