You go to them as a last recourse. All they want to do is cut. The Sports Medecine guys (usually Chiropractors or Osteopaths) can get you up and around quickly with STIM, manipulation, and Diathermy. The they start you on a Physical Therapy regimen that will lower the chance of recurrence.
Maybe replace the word 'you' with 'I'?
I suffered a really bad pain in my hip/lower back about a year ago, didn't come of a motorbike or something, and it turned out to be a displaced intervertebral disc. Not something ibuprofen or NSAID will solve - although it will reduce the inflammation. Glad I went to see a decent GP, and a decent physio afterwards. Not only did the physio cure me in about 8 sessions, he also gave me some sound advise on strengthening some muscles to prevent future problems.
The problem here is we are all giving generic advise, and I assume nobody knows the OP. We don't even know the age! Everything here might be sound advise, but we all might be wrong as well. Only the OP knows exactly what he/she feels, and the OP should respond to that. To state OP should not see a doctor for this one timer might be a mistake.
