Dengue Fever
I'm not a doctor, never have been and never will be... This is not medical advice.
This is a first persons account of getting and recovering from Dengue in the hope it provides some insight and awareness for 440 readers.
The main problem with dengue is it is very easy to misinterpret the initial symptoms and once those
symptoms become severe they can quickly become life threatening.
I had to make a brief trip to the capital to submit my paperwork for a new passport, 5 hours in an uncomfortable bus there, a night in a guest house and 5 uncomfortable hours back. I say uncomfortable because the seats on the bus are designed for people of a different height than myself, the headrest only goes to the top of my shoulders, so I had 10 hours of bobble head, which I was expecting to give me some muscle pain afterwords, fatigue in my legs were also expected.
While at the guest-house especially in the morning I was feeling somewhat less than my normal self, I had put it down to the 4 or 5 Black Panthers I had drank the night before, I also noticed what looked like heat-rash / prickly-heat on my shoulders, its not uncommon for me to get heat rash often as I originally came from a cold country, and out of paranoia I slept with the windows closed and locked.
My first night home I didn't sleep well, which I found surprising as I was knackered, the pains in my neck and legs were not getting any better and I could feel my temperature start to fluctuate. I had presumed I had picked up a cold or flue from the guest-house, again not surprising as tourists bring every strain of flu, cough and cold with them from every corner of the globe.
During the next day things progressively got worse, by early evening My temperature was over 40, chest pains, a headache like never before, my vision blurred and barely able to stand. My family prop me up on the motorbike and drive me to the nearest clinic. At this point I'm not very sentient except convinced I'm about to have a heart attack, sadly the first presumption I got right.
A vile of blood drawn and intravenous fluids start going in, half an hour later blood test results are back positive for Dengue, many syringes of drugs are added to the i.v. and several injections to my butt. After the first bag of Fluids I start feeling like I'm no longer on deaths door, 3 bags in total half a dozen injections and I'm back on my feet. At this point I still feel like I have been shot in the head and hit by a train but at least recovering.
Edit.. forgot to mention (still rather hazy) 2 bags of iv and drugs that evening / night and 1 more in the morning, then they then drew blood again and re-tested to confirm I was no longer infected.
Total cost $90.
It appears I had become infected just before I set off on my trip.
Symptoms to watch for..
Feels like bad influenza but with no snot.
Pains in your bones that remind you of childhood growing pains.
A rash that looks allot like heat-rash.

i had dengue;
first 3 days stayed in bed, hard to move, every bone in my body ached, no rash, high fever
read online what the symptoms were and knew i had it
day 4 up and about slowly
day 5 had a blood test ( $10) which confirmed had dengue.
No drugs other than aspirin, no iv's
took about 2 months till back to normal

I am happy to hear you made a full recovery, I am sorry to hear it took so long to recover.Phuket2006 wrote:i had dengue;

For the safety of other 440 readers I would like to point out there are 5 versions of dengue, all of different severity, listen to the doctor, don’t skimp on the medication.
Taking aspirin is probably the worst thing someone could do if they have the hemorrhagic version.
My blood was turning to jelly, my heart becoming unable to pump it and my brain having a hard time feeding on jelly. Blood vessles bursting and fluids unable to move to my blood, I was within an hour or 2 of cardiac arrest.
There are at least some positive things to come from this, I am now immune to that particular strain of dengue and I now know what the onset of a heart attack feels like. (in the past every chest pain has worried me).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_fever makes for good slight further understanding and browsing 440 good for re-cooperation.

The bad news is; there are four strains with a possible fifth strain discovery just recently. It is entirely possible to experience this virus infection more than once. They called it "bone crusher" disease in India. Luckily I had it in my twenties.. just laid in bed and toked on the old chillum for a few days.

Edit: I wrote a long post about my weird dengue fever experience but it disappeared when I submitted it..
Only the last ending question survived:
Isn't a vaccine about to be commercialized ?

Not sure what all those drugs/injections/IVs were about other than getting the bill up to $90.Nick&Bun wrote:, many syringes of drugs are added to the i.v. and several injections to my butt. Who did you go to? Other than non-aspirin pain reliever I don't believe any of that crap is a good idea, it certainly wasn't how I was treated.

The third bag the next morning was optional, as the 2 the night before had made such a dramatic improvement I was happy to go for it, and I hadn't eaten anything in what felt like days.
They were able to tell me me blood sugar levels and tell me that there was something wrong with my intestines from the first blood test, so I'm guessing they ran more than just a dengue test. How they can tell I have a problem with my intestines from a blood test is something I don't understand.
I was also coughing quite allot which I think he tried to fix. I have actually coughed myself a new set of abdominal muscles, not quite a six pack.
I would like to point out that in the 17 years of living in Asia that is the first time I have let them hook me up to a saline iv.
I also got 4 days worth of mixed pills to take.
It was not my regular doctor, he was away for a few days, which really felt like being kicked while I was down.
The breakdown of $90 as far as I can make out was
3x Bags of iv cocktail @ $20 each
2x Dengue test $5 each
$20 injections in the butt and mixed bags of pills and other tests done from first blood sample.
Its now been a few days and I still have a headache but that could be a side effect from posting on 440.
I don't feel like I've been ripped off, more like quite grateful.

I caught it in 2009 after Typhoon Ketsana hit Hoi An (Vietnam) where I was living at the time.
At first, I thought I had the flu but I started hallucinating and saw an image of a mosquito with a white stripe on it. When I googled pics, I realized I had it. I didn't want a Vietnamese Doctor poking me with a chopstick so I prescribed myself codeine and rode it out.
Never had it again but difficult to forget the bone-shaking.

Had all the symptoms once, but the blood tests were negative....horrible pain in the bones/back. Massive temp. I spent a week in bed on oxycodone, as that was the only thing that made it possible to sleep at all for an hour or two, here or there. Longest week of my life.

True. But on the plus side, she would have been stoked her estrogen levels were through the roof.Playboy wrote:... and Srey Mom got the shock of her life when she found out that she was pregnant after all !?!Petrol Head wrote:That's because Samnang probably mistook your sample for Srey Mom's.Felgerkarb wrote:Had all the symptoms once, but the blood tests were negative....horrible pain in the bones/back.
