Health Insurance. A Deserved Recommendation.
Health Insurance. A Deserved Recommendation.
Couple of months ago ended up in hospital feeling just plain unwell. Turned out my blood pressure was in the off the scale area.
The hospital took my insurance details and got the initial go ahead for tests etc. and pretty soon we were into the best part of a grand.
Then the hospital informed me AXA in France (the backers) had taken the decision that blood pressure was a pre-existing condition and therefore they were not going to pay.
I just thought fuck it, insurance companies are not very nice people and called off the next test which was going to be another grand or so.
So what's a pre-existing condition? If you have a stroke or a heart attack, it presumably doesn't come out of nowhere. A brain tumour too presumably doesn't just turn up one day. I guess my BP problem was pre-existing but I didn't know that.
When it was time to renew the policy I obviously declined. At this point the broker who advised me on different policies got involved and fought my corner and the insurance company soon changed their minds and came up with the money. He told me I should have contacted him right away but I presumed he was just a salesman. He isn't. He gives a damn about his clients. Honestly I didn't care too much about the cash but didn't want a pre-existing condition on my record and he absolutely understood this.
So if you are looking for health insurance there are dozens of options out there but there is one guy who I would like to recommend to steer you through the choices. He's been mentioned here before, and deserves it:
Mark Seymour. Based in HCMC but often here too: [email protected]
Mod people: I stick this in the Speakeasy so it will be seen. Health insurance is a concern for a lot of folks.

im guessing you're not some young rock-star - you should get your pressure taken more regularly. didn't the insurance make you take a thorugh medical when you took out the policy ? thanks for the info, seems I may have been wrong about the guy.
whiplash and the back problems associated with it are classed as a pre existing conditions nowadays as well. seems the standard get out clause.
btw extreme case but- someone i used to know was diagnosed with a brain tumor - it was near his spine at the top of his neck. he felt pins and needles all down one arm. they couldn't operate and 2 months later he was dead. Glasgow btw.

Someone of your age (and lifestyle) should be checking their blood pressure as a matter of course. I do it, and I'm 25 years your junior.

The incidence of high blood pressure is considerably more prevalent among people of, how to say, paki types.slavedog wrote:Someone of your age (and lifestyle) should be checking their blood pressure as a matter of course. I do it, and I'm 25 years your junior.

And Violet, surely you aren't running around bare back (without health insurance)?

My personal health insurance (taken out specially for my trip here) expired a few days ago. I think I am automatically insured at a basic level by my employer. I do actually want to upgrade to the cover that includes emergency evacuation but I suspect I may take awhile to do that.

to be fair, Rob W did say 'types'.
I can see his attraction to Ann now. It isn't all about they blow jobs. Kindred spirit.

Aren't you an Aussie citizen? If so, can't an Aussie simply get a flight back home and get free healthcare? Not a bad backup plan, that. Feel sorry the the Americans, though. No insurance policy and they're are truly f*cked, and they pay through the nose out-of-pocket for insurance without an employer sponsored plan, which not many of them living in Cambodia have access to.violet wrote:My personal health insurance (taken out specially for my trip here) expired a few days ago. no, i'm not an Aussie citizen.
plus 'get a flight home'.... um... let's say a person is in too bad a condition to just 'get a flight home'? If I thought I could just get a flight home no matter what the cambodian traffic threw at me (or Ann, or the other 'Anne' for that matter), I'd never even consider insurance.

Yeah, I'm just saying a limited policy for catastrophic injury with medivac provisions is a good option for Aussies (less so for Brits - and not at all viable for Americans) and probably not as near expensive as a full healthcare policy as Rob W mentioned, especially if your insurance company fights every claim and you still end up with high out of pocket costs for routine procedures.violet wrote:no, i'm not an Aussie citizen.
