Bicycles
Do any of you highly intelligent folk know much about bicycles?
I’m interested in getting myself a bike and heading off for weekends around the country.
Questions are...
Road bike vs mountain bike. Or road bike with nobbly tires or mountain bike with smooth tires?
Brands.
It seems that nearly every neighbourhood has a new bike shop recently opened. The bikes look new and sparkly but I don’t know much about them. What should I be looking out for?
If I want to spend in 300-400 range what brands should I be looking at?
(Scott, Twitter, trinx, keysto, giant, xtreme) I made the mistake of searching on Facebook for bicycles now all i see is bike shops advertising.
Loads of shops are bringing in new bikes from Thailand and China. But I have never heard of the make and dunno if they are any good of not.
I’m not interesting in racing, I just want something well put together with decent quality parts that won’t need replacing within 3 months and a frame which is strong but light enough.
Any advice?

I had a Giant transit bike with road tyres, I think it was $350 from Aeon. Didn’t have discs or suspension, but was brilliant around town. Cunce swiped it out the front of Pon’s, but it was lighter and cheaper than my replacement Giant MB.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 2:41 pmDo any of you highly intelligent folk know much about bicycles?

If I had a do over, I wouldn’t have bought the more expensive MB because of the extra weight and rolling resistance from the mud tyres.

Personally I'd spend a little more, 5-6 hundred.
That will sort of pull you away from the mass of identical dross and you should get disc brakes, which are worth it in my opinion.
As for mountain etc. don't know. I prefer a hybrid but see what you like.
Edit. As Petrol Head says, mountain bike tyres are slower but there are a lot of potholes about for road tyres. Hence my liking hybrids.

I think I may have got my terminology wrong,
When I say road bike I think I meant hybrid. Does road bike mean racing bike?
Is a hybrid the same/similar as a touring bike.
What about transit bike Petrol Head is that a hybrid?

^ yeah hybrid would be transit.
You sit upright, what you want in Phnom Penh, but with thinner tyres and less weight for less rolling resistance.
Road bike, you’d be hunched over with skinny tyres, useless on Phnom Penh’s busy, detritus strewn roads.

My suggestion would be a mountain bike for the gearing, disc brakes and rugged frame. Modified with smoothish tires and a big comfortable seat and handlebars that allow you to sit upright.

Get the most expensive bike you can afford, ( but dont even look at one less than $400) the better bikes will be lighter (aluminum , carbon fiber frame) and have better components (shimano) and most important last longer
Look at Scott, Trek, GT, Cannondale, higher end giants, ( although the frame an components, rather than the name is what you should be looking at)
Hybrid or mtn bike is fine, ( i personally prefer a mtn bike with extended up right additions to the handlebars)
Front shocks and possible disk brakes (although my 20 year old Scott has brake pads and i think there fine)
A cheap heavy bike is no fun to ride,
Newer mtn bikes are double front chain ring with a 9/10 cog rear sprocket, ( older bikes ( like mine) are triple front and 7 in the rear)
Very important; Makes sure you get the right size,
get a pair of padded bike shorts, they make some nice ones that are like cargo shorts with padded inserts so u dont need those tight ones
26" tires
a smaller padded seat
Look at some you tube videos on how to choose a bike<
Have fun riding, best 18 months of my life was on a bicycle thru se asia

This is all good stuff, it kind of confirms what I was thinking of doing.
I’m inclined to stay away from a mountain bike, I won’t need the gearing as where I will be going is generally flat. I see a FB group of riders which head out on weekends for some interesting rides and they can get off the beaten track - which does appeal to me also. So I’m not yet sure what type of tyres I would get. Maybe the ultimate answer is two separate bikes for the two different purposes...

Over $400 and you can’t go wrong. All the known brands (Trek, Cannondale, Trinx, GT etc) all all pretty much made in China, or Taiwan, by two companies, Giant being the main one. (Only high end carbon bikes are made in US, EU etc but you’re looking at $10k plus).
Shimano come in different flavours. Under $300 you’ll get the crappy set. $800 up you’ll get SLX etc.
Giant are everywhere.

There's a new bike shop on 360 you should check out, they have some serious bikes there. The Cervélo P5X Lamborghini bike is really amazing. They have some good deals on but it's all very high end stuff so expect high prices.

I could spend ages browsing in a shop like this, but end up feeling sorry for getting the sales staff hopes up when there is no way I'm dropping big, big cash on a bicycle.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 11:16 pmThere's a new bike shop on 360 you should check out, they have some serious bikes there.
