My wife and are in our 60s and about to retire to Cambodia from the US. I have played and worked in Cambodia for 23 years with nearly 100 trips in/out hence I’m familiar. I’ve hesitated in the past due to the healthcare situation however I believe its greatly improved in the past years. Medical insurance is my predicament.
I’m about to be US Medicare eligible, but I have no insurance for Cambodia. I have expat friends in country who have home-country insurance programs that cover them, and others who go without insurance (not for me). The quotes I’ve been receiving for expat insurance is staggering. About the same premiums as for US-based insurance. A minimum of $1500+ / month for two of us. It’s a showstopper. Curious what others do?
Medical Insurance
I think that's darn good advice. I posted this on FB forum and got lots of responses however not this idea. I'm going to renew my MedJet membership and keep my US-based HMO. Best I can afford.
thanks!

Look into April (Global, based in France) essential plan.
Cost me <US$3,000 a year when I enrolled at age 64. Five years later, a bit more than $3,000.
This is with a $500 deductible.
I was hospitalized at Royal Phnom Penh after an accident, bill paid in full directly to the hospital with no problem.
Also worth looking at is Cigna Close Care -- from Cigna Global NOT Cigna US.
I don't know why you got such high quotes, maybe these were US based insurers? And perhaps it was for OPD + hospitalizaion? You need only hospitalization, as long as the hospitalization only policy includes day surgeries, dialysis and cancer care.
Rates will go up as you age though and >80 years might indeed run as high as $10k a year for the two of you.
