Changing Khmer family name post marriage
Changing Khmer family name post marriage
A mate is getting married to a Khmer bird ( in Australia ) and wants her to take his surname .
I never did that because I could not be arsed changing all of my wife's docs ; khmer passport / id card / etc
Can anyone who has been through this outline the reality of what actually needs to be done to square everything away etc ?
tks

Not even sure it's possible as it will need to be done in the family book, unless she has her own book. I bet her family won't be too happy about it either. Very un Cambodian thing to do.
You can try asking on the FB Marriage in Cambodia group.

Is it even possible / legal etc to have a khmer passport in KHR name and ....eventually...another passport in the western name ? I would not have thought so ?
I remember when i went through it, although i am older and always thought my wife would, take my name etc , i just thought....well.....its her name....she can keep it ! It has served us very well . 0 complications etc.

Just get her to change her name on FB, and keep her old name - he’ll never notice the difference.
Maybe TikTok too.

Changing your family name because you got married is Not The Cambodian way of doing things.
If he wants to marry the lady, he needs to spend a bit more energy in understanding the Culture he is marrying into.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Perhaps you missed the bit where I was just asking for changing names etc Not a cultural lesson of sorts, which yes, I am giving him in the background in the interim. Facts please. Thanks.
My wife changed name on USA passport and IDs. Not going to bother changing anything in Cambodia, don’t see much reason to do so.

I think he said he was marrying in Australia. So wouldn't it be the culture that she is marrying into? I believe the wife taking the husband's surname is the Australian way of doing things. Even if incredibly dated and sexist.

It’s possible and legal. The legal name in foreign passports isn’t Cambodia’s concern.yoyomah wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 3:34 pmIs it even possible / legal etc to have a khmer passport in KHR name and ....eventually...another passport in the western name ? I would not have thought so ?
I have different names in my different passports and so does the Cambodian side of my family.

Kingdom isn't recognise married in another country so there's no point even to try change name on the basis of that.yoyomah wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 11:46 amA mate is getting married to a Khmer bird ( in Australia ) and wants her to take his surname.
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.
Ballache of a procedure to change a name in Cambodia, I'd strongly advise against it, but if she wants to go ahead with it then she needs to go to the Department of Identification to start the process.
As others have said, if she has Aussie Citizenship then can change her name there, and keep her Khmer name in Cambodia.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Ok thanks everyone.
