Hi All,
We are moving from the UK to Phnom Penh in May with a 3 year old and an 8 year old. Any recommendations for what to ship please? We are paying for this ourselves with a small contribution from the school I will be working at. Also, any thoughts on how much a nanny might cost? Thanks!
What to ship for a family of 4?
health care and education for your kids. I can not imagine why anyone one would move here with children. Very selfish and not very responsible parenting.

Hi Seggers...
I will assume you are working for one of the BIG 3 International Schools and therefore have the medical cover and education covered.
Honestly, you can get pretty much anything here, I would say save your allowance, bring as much in your suitcases as you can and use the money you will save on buying things here.

C'mon, like a year abroad in a totally different environment will totally devastate those children, instead of being a great (learning) experience....Baconroll wrote:health care and education for your kids. That said, without health insurance with medivac don't start the adventure with your kids. In Cambodia children die of diseases easily cured with good healthcare around. Healthcare is, to put it mildly, pretty basic here. In my six years here I had to medivac someone once to Bangkok - so I believe there's a serious chance you might need it.
Most items can be bought here. When I came here I brought:
- A good motorbike helmet, fitting my head. Might be hard to get here.
- My iPOD loaded with music and audiobooks. Can be obtained here of course, but internet here's much slower.
- Some memorabilia (photos) from people I left behind.
- My bank cards + a creditcard with enough credit to have access to cash in case shit hits the fan. Enough ca$h to survive the first month. I'd not bring GBP but USD, it' king here.
- My passport and driving license. No need for an international driving license, useless here.
- My laptop.
- A really small desktop computer (which I never used), still sitting in my safe.
- 5 kilos of books, now I would bring an eBOOK.
- Some clothes.
- An extra pair of good leather shoes.
All in all about 20 kg, which is the amount the airline will allow you to bring here.

Really? I grew up in Africa and it was an experience I would not want to miss.Baconroll wrote:health care and education for your kids. I can not imagine why anyone one would move here with children. Very selfish and not very responsible parenting.
Back to the OP: shoes are hard to get if you have large feet. Decent toys though there is a fair bit available now but expensive.

Oh, on the nanny, if you look for a nanny speaking Khmer only it'll be cheap, say 100-300 USD a month depending on working hours, but if the nanny's fluent in English it's a different story.seggers73 wrote:Hi All,

Actually, that is the two sides of the story.Chuck Wow wrote:If you read the post properly before commenting you wouldn't sound like such a twatflannel.Baconroll wrote:health care and education for your kids. Baconroll thinks (in your cultural terms), why would you bring your children to a poverty stricken, disease laden, pedo kingdom of filth?
CW thinks, if you are coming to this culture, you best be able to accept it.
In the end ... I think that if you weigh everything .................. you might just get what you want.

I would say this. Almost everything is readily available here if you are willing to look around a bit, except for any specialty / niche items you might need or desire. Electronics are generally more expensive here, so if your planning to buy a new laptop or anything like that in the near future, you'd be better off buying it before coming.Chuck Wow wrote:Hi Seggers...

As for a nanny, $100 to $300 is right. I had a couple live in nanny's for < $200 (food provided by me), but they all annoyed the hell out of me, so now the boy just visits his grandmother.

Toys and games, maybe. Monument Books has a small toy shop and Sorya Mall has videogames but boardgames are difficult to find.
Import taxes are high here so you might want to buy electronics before you come. If you pass through other countries on the way they would probably have cheaper options than the UK, also.
Certain foods possibly but it would probably be cheaper to buy them here.
There's a facebook group called Cambodian Parents' Network that may be of use to you.
