Marrying a Cambodian Citizen in Singapore
Marrying a Cambodian Citizen in Singapore
Hey Guys,
First time poster but I've been lurking a while.
I'm British and my fiancee is a Cambodian Citizen, and I'm trying find the simplest option for us to get married. Getting married in the UK or Cambodia seems to be a long drawn out process with so much paperwork.
It appears that it's a lot easier for foreigners to get married in Singapore. For first time married couples, they don't need a Certificate of No Impediment (a real headache trying to get it from the MoI in Cambodia). It'll also be officially recognized in the UK.
However, my Cambodian fiancee says that the marriage won't be recognized in her country and that she wouldn't be able to register it.
Is this true? And how important is this in the grand scheme of things when I apply for her Settlement Visa to come to the UK?

yes it is; no Certificate of No Impediment needed, but one of u needs reside in the country for 14 days
HK is easier; http://hongkong.angloinfo.com/informati ... tnerships/
you do need something that shows she is single, i got the paper form her local commune boss and also her id card says she is single, hope its enough
Do u really care if its recognized in Cambodia? I dont

Cambodians can officially get married only in Cambodia.thisisbox wrote:my Cambodian fiancee says that the marriage won't be recognized in her country and that she wouldn't be able to register it.
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.
In Cambodia it's called a "Certificate of celibacy, widowhood, divorce", and you get it from the Sangkat where the person is registered, not the MoI. Very easy to get.thisisbox wrote:Certificate of No Impediment (a real headache trying to get it from the MoI in Cambodia).
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Denmark.
No residency issues (24 hours) and easy to get a visa.
Bit pricey though!

Denmark is hard, part of Schengen... So Schengen visa laws apply, thus just as difficult as getting a visa for Germany etc... But she might get one by applying.Phuket2006 wrote:how do u get ur Khmer gf a visa for Denmark?

I was under the impression if you apply and state you're going there to marry you'll get one a lot easier. Lots of people go there just to marry.Kachang wrote:Denmark is hard, part of Schengen... Also. You'll have to go to Bangkok to apply as there is no Danish embassy in PP.

probably not that important...i'd be talking to the embassy and/or looking at the immigration dept website and brushing up on the criteria and requirements...they're more interested in demonstrating a continuous and committed relationship...then you'll find there's a few more hoops you'll have to jump through...thisisbox wrote: And how important is this in the grand scheme of things when I apply for her Settlement Visa to come to the UK?
He's been in his room 35 years...time to let him out!

I don't care too much if the marriage isn't recognized in Cambodia as we're not settling there, but my fiancee cares.
I called up the Marriage Registry in Singapore and they told me for first time married couples, there's no need to provide a CoNI. Where did you hear/read that it was a requirement?
Just out of curiorsity, how hard/easy is it for a Cambodian citizen to get a Visa for Hong Kong? So you didn't get a CoNI for it, just a paper to say that she's single?

That was the thought that crossed my mind. Cambodian passport holders don't need a visa to enter Singapore but they certainly do to enter HK. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose. The hurdles of getting a HK visa or the tedium of Singapore for 14 days!by thisisbox » Mon Feb 29, 2016 1:25 pm

The money spent on flying to and fro, hotels, food, etc vs the cost of doing the legal things here would be about the same.
The wife's family would also probably appreciate being present. Get enough enough guests to show up and you'll at least end up square on the ceremony/party costs.
Time wise here it's simple, it takes a while to process, but no more than 3 days of actual work.

Maybe the cost would be the same, but the costs seems to vary so drastically for those who got married/quote in Cambodia. There's no reliable figure.
So I guess that just leaves the other main issue which is what's easier? And I guess more certified in the eyes of the UKVI.
Right now, it appears that going to Singapore or HK would be a lot easier. Of course, there would be a small ceremony in Cambodia after that too to please the wife's family.
