Why are we on page 5 of this? Just ask her if she wants to go to law school. If so, send her to law school. If not, don't. She's capable of assessing that earning capacity stuff, if that's her motivation.
I mean, imagine a daughter wanting to go to college to study art or philosophy and the father saying no because he's done an overbearing analysis of what philosophy majors earn and telling her he won't pay for it because the best thing for her future is to have less education and just learn a skill.
Do what makes her happy without regard to whether you or she will financially benefit from it later.
Should I send my Missus to Law School?

You are right of course KH, and what other perspective would I have? lol. Yes, she has a degree: I have joked before that she has a degree in cheating. This does not speak to her morals, but the system and its endemic corruption. (although that is changing now) Even in the west, we play all our angles in education, there is hardly much integrity, its all about getting good marks, and that means finding out what the prof wants and giving it to him/her and pushing all limits of what you can get away with, it seems.
I did begin this thread wondering the merits of her pursuing a Law degree, and I have had a lot of good input, including yours, thank you. GM also noted that there are more good reasons for an education than financial outcomes which reminds me of a quote "education makes your mind a nicer place to live"
Sure, theres a loss of income but it's income over time so its not like saying you just lost 10K as the lost income and tuition is a bit incidental to me in this case.
She loves learning, and she strives to be the best. Its always important to her to be the first student, and she is competitive like that. She loves languages, and she just started a new Chinese class yesterday.
TBH, I am not entirely sure of the outcome of this idea either, because I do not exactly think she has the eye of the tiger. But, I suppose, when she sees a goal in front of her, and she sets herself up against her peers, I have no doubt she could achieve in a way that would make me proud.
I also agree that contacts are very important, however, I am a great asset in this regard, because, IF she was a lawyer, I would coach and train her in a different way, and together, we would pursue opportunities that, while enriching ourselves, would be of benefit and value to the ex pat community. I suppose, I can also teach her about ethics and integrity.
I have polished her CV, and I will edit all outgoing documents for her if important. I agree about being stricter with my English, we just talked about that, and she is very receptive to my correction. I tend to take on some of her Kminglisn because, quite frankly, it is quite efficient to me. I need to stay aware of it without becoming a language Nazi.
Thanks again for your input and best wishes.

Whilst your intentions are clearly good I think you are approaching this from a western perspective.
Your girl already has a degree, yes? Another degree is unlikely to add more value. Third level qualifications here are cheap.
You need to think not only of the cost of study but of the opportunity cost. She earns 250-300 per month currently. A 4 year law degree will mean she loses most of this salary whilst she studies, say 200 drop in salary due to her studies (200*12*4) this is another 10k.
What are her interests? You discuss a variety of very different careers. Pick one which suits her skills - if she is interested and skilled then she has a greater chance of being successful.
Career progression here is made up of contacts + ability + qualification with the latter 2 being the least significant.
Use your western experience to get her a good CV, train her in interviews. Impress on her what hard work & commitment is and how to stand out in a workplace. Try to help her get contacts in business. Speak only English to her, don't ignore her cute little English mistakes. Correct all her spoken mistakes.
If she doesn't have family/friend contacts in business then it will be harder for her to be successful - but certainly not impossible.
Good luck.
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

She would feel very happy pursuing a higher education. She is also 'better' when she has a purpose. She is not the domestic that her sisters are. She cannot cook and has no interest in keeping house. Her family has allowed this because while she was so busy pursuing an education, they did as much to help her and that has persisted. They are very proud.gavinmac wrote:Why are we on page 5 of this? Yours is a good and fair response Gavin, excepting for the fact that, is we want to sit around and chit chat, while perhaps not so efficient, theres no harm done now is there?

I would recommend she continues to study Chinese and if she can and read and write.
As to further study it depends where her interest lie law? finance? since she is working in accountancy then look at the ACCA course mention by PB.

Well, thanks. She does like paper, however, for lack of options and knowledge, she was kind of funneled to a BBA. I doubt it would have been her first choice. There is a masters level law and public administration course she could do. Another one in project management. These could lead to Gov't or NGO work. (I would prefer to keep her away form the NGO's poisoning her mind though)drwahwah wrote:I would recommend she continues to study Chinese and if she can and read and write.

Not sure what you mean by this. NGO's are many and varied.PorkPiePorn wrote:. (I would prefer to keep her away form the NGO's poisoning her mind though)
I work with an NGO and know part of the sector pretty well (some excellent, many good, some dross). Your comment comes across as pretty ignorant and small minded - though I could be misunderstanding you.
She could do a lot worse (I.e. Government work) than get a job with an NGO.
International NGO's should recognise and reward ability and performance more so than gov work which is more cronyism.

You are right, thats quite a generalization, and its quite obviously questionable how working for the government could possible be better. In fact, I was thinking a lot of NGO's might like hiring a female law graduate, where merit might count more than who you know. Thanks again.

Whatever she does I commend you and her for making Cambodia better. She's the future after all.
Don't take any notice of dicks telling you this course is worthless or that course is a joke etc. They don't actually know just what they hear, often from 440 and TOF.
At the end of the day they're furthering their education and that's a good thing.
I remember in the UK back in the early 90's when people would say "Engineering degree? What's the point there's no jobs" etc

In the U.S. every state has it's own bar exam, which let's face it, is really an anti-competitive measure. Local lawyers don't want the competition. The 50K upfront free is all about keeping fresh hungry talent out of the market, and horribly depressing for aspiring but poor young minds...scobienz wrote:Interesting and very familiar rhetorical flourishes there. Ending a sentence with 'right' and starting another with 'let me guess'. The prevailing left-wing view point. It reminds me of another very prolific poster who disappeared from 440 almost overnight around the time you joined.Abou-Gor wrote: so you want your mrs to be a fucking Cambodian lawyer?!! Back on topic, I worked with a lot of top Khmer lawyers in Phnom Penh. I can absolutely confirm that the asking price of a bribe to be admitted to the local Bar Association starts at $50k. It's not for no reason that the International Bar Association scathingly called the Cambodian Bar Association hopelessly corrupt.
