Something I have noticed lately...Morticia and her friends, all of whom married foreigners, get mistaken for Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc., but never Cambodian whenever they go out shopping, out to eat, etc...here in Cambodia! When they speak Cambodian to the vendor or whatever, the vendor is shocked and surprised. Today a guy apologized to Morticia in broken English for some minor infraction and when she responded in Khmer he burst out laughing. Oh, you're not a foreigner. I wasn't there at the time, Morticia told me this afterwards. This has been happening more and more.
I wonder if exposure and living with a foreigner rubs off on them so much that they behave differently so as to no longer be tribal enough to pass as Khmer. I know it pisses Morticia off sometimes.

Interesting question.
Seeing who started this thread I was initially expecting yet another topic concerning how uncompromisingly pristine and perfect his SO is in every conceivable way possible.
I digress, during my first visit to Wat Phnom, after paying my buck, the ticket lady hollered after my guide for the day (one of Zanzi-bar's finest).
After talking with the toll-troll, miss hot-pants came back in a huff and said that she almost had to pay for a ticket as the gate keeper didn't think she was Khmer.
A distantly related story happened 2 water festivals ago. My wife was holding our baby daughter whilst we made our way through the crowds.
I noticed my wife making small talk with one of the unwashed mass as we navigated through the surge.
Seeing her chuckle to herself, I inquired as to what they chatted about. She told me that the lady asked her if she was the nanny for a Western family and their baby. I guess daddy's little girl takes more after papa in the skin colour department.

I thought it was supposed to be very bad luck for couples to visit Wat Phnom?DanCooper wrote:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
My missus gets mistaken for Thai, but for some reason that happened much more a few years ago.

IT’S Monday morning, and Lay Sophon, 33, has made the short pilgrimage up Wat Penh to pay her respects to the Lady of the Hill. “Today, I have some free time and I wanted to bring some fruit to Daun (Grandmother) Penh,” she says.
“It’s a Khmer belief that when we want to achieve something successful, we have to pray to her.”
Lay Sophon, the owner of a small restaurant, guesthouse and hair salon, comes here every month or two.
“It’s not regular,” she says. “My husband also comes here, but mainly when there’s a big cere-mony like Khmer New Year.”
Although most visitors come to Wat Phnom to bask in its antiquity, Lay Sophon is here to secure a better future.
“I want my business to grow bigger and bigger,” she says.
Phauk, 33, is here for more immediate reasons. “I’m praying for Daun Penh to help me pass my exam,” the accountancy student at the Khmer Business School says.
“I passed the exam, but they haven’t released the final results yet, so I’m waiting.”
Phauk can’t take up a new job until he has received his certification.
“My school is near here, and this is full of trees and it is a nice place to come,” he says.
“I used to come here before with my friends. At that time, I didn’t pray for anything, but this time I have my own problem.”
One of Phauk’s fellow students, Hong Seila, 21, has come with him.
“I want Daun Penh to help me pass my exams,” she says.
“I think she can give me confidence. But it (the result) depends on my ability to pass the exam.”
This is the first time Hong Seila has come to Wat Phnom for scholarly reasons.
“When I studied at high school, I didn’t feel any pressure,” she says.
“Now it is more difficult; that’s why I need confidence from Daun Penh.”
Despite its association with good fortune, Wat Phnom is not lucky for all-comers. Local tradition dictates that courting couples should stay well clear.
“It will bring bad luck for couples who have not got married yet,” Phauk says.
“They should not come here. If they ride their motorbike one time around Wat Phnom, it will bring them bad luck.”
Fortunately for Phauk and Hong Seila, they are just good friends – so, hopefully, the Lady of the Hill will bestow upon them the good luck they are seeking.

Thats a really interesting observation worth some thought. Perhaps they carry or posture themselves differently, or don't 'fall in' the same pecking order any more being emboldened. It could be a case of how you can spot a tourist a mile away as distinguished from us ex-pats who are no longer walking around bumping into things.Felgerkarb wrote:Something I have noticed lately...Morticia and her friends, all of whom married foreigners, get mistaken for Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc., but never Cambodian whenever they go out shopping, out to eat, etc...here in Cambodia! My lady has overheard (a lot of rude) conversations as we walk together, they are saying "oh, look the Yuon" Thats understandable when shes with me, but when she is alone, she has also been asked by officials to show her ID when she goes to places like temples and such, because they don't think shes Khmer.
Also, when we were in VN, they all spoke Vietnamese to her, and were confused when she said she couldn't understand them, in English. haha.

The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Not my S.O., but her best friend. She has slightly lighter skin and rounder face than the wife and I have been sitting next to her at a few restaurants or bars and the staff has asked her if she is Viet. After the second time it happened I realized they were surprised she was speaking Khmer so well.
Also, more than once restaurant/bar staff have assumed that me and the wife's friend are together if it's the three of us sitting at a table.

Nope. On the other hand, when in Thailand, people will speak Thai to her, Lao in Laos and Vietnamese in Younland.
