Foreigner getting married in Cambodia
Foreigner getting married in Cambodia
Hi, I'm new to these forums. I have a question about getting a marriage certificate from Cambodia. I'm a US citizen and my fiancée is Khmer. I've read a lot of posts/info and I understand it takes a long time (especially with the corruption). I do not have much time off from work, so if I fly to Cambodia and submit all the documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, can I leave back to the US and my fiancée take care of the rest? Also, do these paperwork expire as I could fly back a few months later if I absolutely have to.
Can someone who has married legally within Cambodia share their experience? How difficult was it? How long did it take? What hurdles did you run into? I would appreciate any insight/advice.

its not hard. they got it down to a science. they'll handle everything (corrupton works in your favor, money talks). you just gotta come down and take pictures, and pay everyone. i'm actually serious.
basically its alot of khmer to english translaton documents that you have to pay for. but she can do that.
most important is you show up and do all the wedding stuff, and take pictures.
edit: but the stuff on your side of the water, you gotta do yourself. your countries immigration and stuff you gotta handle. but all the documents on her side, she can take care of it.
also nowadays, they want financial records that you're supporting her. western union reciepts work. start sending her some western union every month.

Thanks for the reply. I can get all the documents on my side. When I actually fly there, how long does it take? Can I leave before getting the actual marriage certificate and let her take care of the rest?JimSocks wrote:its not hard. they got it down to a science. they'll handle everything (corrupton works in your favor, money talks). you just gotta come down and take pictures, and pay everyone. i'm actually serious.

Also, does anyone know for the $2,500/month income requirement, can it be combined income from 2 different jobs?

of course it can be income from two (or more) jobs. you just have to be able to prove the income (payment into a bank account)

To be honest. I dont know how long it takes. Call her and get her started.
Bureaucracy over there is pretty bad. You really have to get on these guys asses or they will take forever because they are lazy
Edit. I will say this tho. If your girl has no experience or isnt the brightest. It's worth it to pay for a handler. Nothing like delaying the process over a year because she had to redo her passport 3 times. I got some stories

yeah the bureaucracy is what I am worried about. I don't want to fly there and run out of time and fly back and it all be a waste. She already has a passport so not worried about that. Just worried about the MFA/MOI process.JimSocks wrote:To be honest. I dont know how long it takes. Call her and get her started.

Thank you this helps! So can I just get a letter from each employer and attach all the pay stubs?violet wrote:of course it can be income from two (or more) jobs. you just have to be able to prove the income (payment into a bank account)
Any ideas how long worth of pay stubs are good to show?
You must go in person to the MoFAIC, once they are satisfied all your documents are in order you must go in person to the MoI for interviews, once you receive the consent to marry letter from the MoI you must go in person to the Sangkat to register and receive the marriage certificate.
Once you've got all of your documentation in order, fly over, complete the medical, submit docs to the MoFAIC and explain your situation and hopefully they can speed up the process at their end, once you've been to the MoI it can take anywhere from a month plus to receive the letter so you could fly home whilst waiting for that, once the letter is issued, fly back and then go straight to the Sangkat.
Read the guide I posted which explains the process

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
The MoI don't want to see your pay slips, you need an official, signed letter from your employer(s) that states your monthly salary. The MoI do not contact your employers to check, so as long as it looks legit....Adamstm92 wrote:Thank you this helps! I used my tax department summary from Aus that showed gross and net income for the previous year. The guy did some mental arithmetic and then shuffled on to the next document. I didn't translate anything.PSD_Kiwi wrote:The MoI don't want to see your pay slips, you need an official, signed letter from your employer(s) that states your monthly salary. It took 2 days over a month, two short meetings at MFAIC to drop off/pick up documents, about 8 hours at the anti trafficking office over 2 days (they were stonewalling). Waited about 3 months before the final certificate was handed over.

Fortunately ordering a mail-order bride is more complicated than buying on Amazon.

Get married offically in Hong Kong

Then have a ceremonial wedding in Cambodia done by the monks - not registered, no need as you are legally married elsewhere.
or get sensible and do not marry.

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
The first is a good idea, if one must perform the grisly rites. The second is also a good idea.LaudJohn wrote:Get married offically in Hong Kong

Edit: In the extremely unlikely event that you might want a divorce down the line, that would have to be under HK jurisdiction too?
Nice.
