am I the only one who thinks this thread title, posted in Speakeasy not questions and answers, is deliberately provocative?

I was responding to the OP's complaint that some of the equipment at Wat Phnom is broken. If you wish to avoid rubbish and homeless people, I suggest leaving the country.1984 wrote:When did you last see Wat Botum?
Last I checked was a few weeks ago and it was an absolute dump. Rubbish everywhere and homeless sleeping there (not that I'm blaming them for not having anywhere to go, but it's not good for the playground).
The Wat Botum playground was renovated before the water festival so maybe in October.otis wrote:BTW a few of the things in the Wat Phnom playground are broken. Any speculation on how one might get them fixed?
C'mere c'meye
Last time we went to Wat Botum playground, in December I think, it was filthy. Trash everywhere, peasant families camping out all over the place. A real shame as I used to enjoy taking my kids there. Some of the indoor playgrounds are great but it's nice to be outside sometimes.ali baba wrote:I was responding to the OP's complaint that some of the equipment at Wat Phnom is broken. I like 3 Mangoes and am pleased that the business is doing well, but I won't take my kids there again after the last time when there was a group of 3 young guys in the pool who were apparently incapable of uttering a sentence without including half a dozen profanities, seemingly oblivious to the presence of several young children, or perhaps just not giving a fuck.GMJS-440 wrote:starkmonster wrote:I don't think so, everyone I've met there is always friendly and jovial.GMJS-440 wrote:I avoid 3 Mangoes as some of the customers are undesirables.
Some customers enjoy a drink and a smoke, but that always seems discrete.
I had one particular person in mind who frequents the place. The kind that stole from his landlord, picks up guests from Wat Phnom and has the appearance of an Ogre. He settled down with one of the Wat girls amazingly, and now believe the child she gave birth to is his despite the fact he is pale and the kid looks Nigerian.
Otherwise, the place is fine. The Motorcycle Tour Co guys go over there and are top notch to get on the piss with.
I will not go due to the other one I mentioned. For some reason he thought it was OK to speak to me and I would like to avoid that in the future. I began to write him as such, however felt bad for him and left it in draft. Not sure why I felt bad for the cretin.

I.ve taken Khmer kids to the Wat Phnom playground a good number of times over the last 5 years or so. About 6 times recently. The kids have between a good and a rip-roaring time and always ask to be taken back there. It would be nice to get some of the broken stuff fixed but the kids work around it ok. I'm surprised that more barangs don't pop down to these two playgrounds as they are so convenient. I've never seen kids give a damn about small defects.
I thought of contacting the nearby US embassy to get them to use some clout to get stuff fixed. Better yet It might be a good very cheap PR opportunity for the embassy to go and fix or even redo the playground and make a big public show of the Norman Rockwellesqe result. Anyone have a way to contact them?

There's a nice playground in the embassy grounds. Maybe you could ask if they'd let the local kids use it?otis wrote:

Anyway, more seriously, I think some German government funding went into the Wat Phnom playground, or it may have been a German NGO, so it might be more useful finding out and asking them.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
When we went a couple of weeks ago we were quickly surrounded by a group of aggressive street kids. It wasn't very pleasant.otis wrote:I'm surprised that more barangs don't pop down to these two playgrounds as they are so convenient. I've never seen kids give a damn about small defects.

For indoor playgrounds, the playground 2nd floor of Kids City is the best I've found...$8 entrance. It has about 5 levels accessed by crawl-throughs and rope ladders - my 5 year old always makes new friends there easily - it can get a bit "Lord of the Flies" very quickly.
The playground in Aeon mall is the same price but nowhere near as good.

It looks like they have some kind of cafe attached to the playground in Kids City on the 2nd floor. I saw Blue Pumpkin signs but no operation. Someone was selling gummy bears, what else?nabanga wrote:For indoor playgrounds, the playground 2nd floor of Kids City is the best I've found...$8 entrance. There was a Blue Pumpkin on the next floor up last time I looked about a year ago. I usually just take drinks & snack from Lucky next doorAlexandra wrote:It looks like they have some kind of cafe attached to the playground in Kids City on the 2nd floor. Went to Meta House, Kraut central a few days ago. Midst the frou-frou artsy environs I spoke with two functionaries there, one barang and one Khmer. Explained the matter to both and asked if they could assist in finding info about the NGO. As is said in Yiddish, they looked at me like a chicken at mankind. One gift to cultural enlightenment earnestly suggested that I look it up on Google.
BTW, you see hardly any expat barangs and their children at the riverside around sunset when the place is teeming with playing Khmer kids most of whom are very well socialized and ok.

Maybe because of the street workers and bag snatching scum. Speaking of scum, do they still let speeding motos mix with the foot traffic?otis wrote:BTW, you see hardly any expat barangs and their children at the riverside around sunset when the place is teeming with playing Khmer kids most of whom are very well socialized and ok.

I take the kids for a walk down the riverside once a week, they always find someone to play with. Not too many bag-snatchings or hookers at that time in the evening. Still the occasional moto on the footpath, not going fast but still bloody annoying.
