Getting a Khmer passport for half-breed, experience
Getting a Khmer passport for half-breed, experience
Today we went to get the sprog his first passport. It was pretty painless.
Although some will argue that there is no need to use an agent, we don't live in PP, and it took best part of 3 hours just to get into town, so decided to use Lucky Lucky for an extra $40 to save time and hassle.
Got to LL, handed over $120 in cash and then had to take a taxi over the Bassac to the passport office, which wouldn't be the easiest place to find if going solo.
Met the LL man there, who whisked us to a special desk where documents (birth cert for kid, marriage cert, carnet residence, my passport, wife's id card and passport) were noted on a form. A bit of waiting around. These were taken away, brought back, taken away and brought back a few more times, took about an hour.
The took the form to another desk, then went to take photo and finger prints (wife he kid normal finger, then her little finger for the kid??). Photos were printed, then went to another desk, then the penultimate desk, where the miserable fat old fucker said we needed a photocopy of my passport and marriage certificate.
Even though he was sat next to a photocopier, he said it was the agent's responsibility, so had to leave the building, find the kid who had been given our case by the LL man, who then pissed off for best part of an hour.
Armed with the copies, went back to the miserable twat, who signed the form and wrote a short essay about how Jr is a half chat, but appeared in his 2 year old person, so was legit.
Then handed in the forms, paid the $80 official fee and GTFO.
The passport will be ready in a couple of weeks, and, because of the agents fees can be picked up from LL and don't have to make the trip over the water.
It cost $5 each way to get there from Monivong by passap car, and sure it would take much longer to queue with the peasants, so all in all the extra $40 is worth it for me. Remember to copy marriage cert/foreign passport to save more time. Some slightly slutty looking Khmer girl in a leopard print top I was trying not to ogle in front of the fam also went through LL at the same time and had disappeared long before us. I kept an eye on her throughout our progress. The extra wait was due to the fuck up with these copies.

Not having a marriage certificate was a big pain in the ass when I was getting my sons papers done, I think it came up when getting his birth certificate.
Problem was not that we had forgotten it, we just never got married. The local sangkat in TTP refused to do the papers with the officer saying he would get into some kind of trouble, which I assumed was the beginning of the planned extortion. I told them they cannot force me to get married and that a child being born has nothing to do with marriage or not, but to no avail.
Had to go out to a sangkat outside of PP where someone knew someone.

That's great, but when are you going to get him a proper passport? Like a UK one for example?

Do this mean that cambodian parent can't get passport for child alone, or why you have to go there with all documents?pedros wrote:Remember to copy marriage cert/foreign passport to save more time.
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.

Next on the list, but a Khmer one first makes UK application easier.Lucky Lucan wrote:That's great, but when are you going to get him a proper passport? Like a UK one for example?
No idea, just did what I was told. There must be ways around non-married couple's kids, but I've done everything by the book, partly to avoid such problems.raendi wrote: Do this mean that cambodian parent can't get passport for child alone, or why you have to go there with all documents?

OK, go and argue with the fat old guy in uniform who decides whether or not to sign your application then. He didn't seem to like foreigners very much, he gave off that vibe. Just relaying my exact experience yesterday.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Again...Marriage Cert & foreign passport are NOT required... fact.

He sounds like a shit c**t, probably hoping you didn't have those documents and was going to charge you extra for not having them.

You've said that twice now. But if the guy who collects the documents and processes the passport application requires the marriage certificate, then it's required.

The passport office has a list of required documents posted, in both English & Khmer (and iirc, Chinese also). There is also a sub-decree which details the required documents...none of which include marriage certificate or foreign passport.
The official was obviously just trying his luck to see if he could extract some tea money, unfortunately for him Pedro's actually was able to produce those documents
