Kampot and Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island)

Last Friday a couple of friends and I decided to have a look at Kampot and Rabbit Island, off Kep.

I've always preferred Kep over Kampot, largely because I've never stopped in Kampot and didn't know much about it except for the Durian Roundabout. That might change now.

We decided to try out the jeep, it needed to be tested for reliability anyway, and with just 4 guys going down, everything fitted perfectly.

So off we were around 2pm.

We went up to Pochentong then carried on to the roundabout where RN 3 branches off, as has been confirmed several times the road is great now.

Amazing what a bit of rain can do to the countryside!

We reached Kampot before darkness fell.

Turned right just before the new bridge onto a dirt track and continued on towards Les Manguiers, there are signs, you can't miss it.

I got a first look at where we were going to be staying...

And then decided a dip was the best option after the three hour drive down from PP.

I've also shrunk...

Actually the owner's kids were playing there so I joined them.

Brackish water, very warm...

Hey Sun San,
Did you manage to go for a dip after dark? The phosphorescence there is just incredible!

I didn't get that. But there was a boatload of local tourists who went upriver a bit to see the fire flies.

Is the phosphorescence a seasonal thing maybe?

Then came dinner. They have set dinners there, not a la carte, but you get a whole panorama of Khmer dishes. On the day we were there they had

fried sour and sweet (pork ribs, char jou pa'aem),

Image

glassnoodle seafood salad (nuom mi sour kreung samot)

Image

Image

and sour Vietnamese soup with chicken (samlor m'jou yuon)

Image

The helpings were very ample, free refills but the food had some of it's 'zing' taken out of it to cater to guests' palates'.

After dinner we drove back to town to check out the night time activities and ended up in a beergarden, where we ordered some 'drinking food' to go with the (expensive at 9000KHR) jugs of beer. The food was good though. The mango salad was outstanding, we also had pork ribs, BBQ'd veal, pickled veggies.

As we left the owner offered us the veal carcass for 70k and we briefly considered it as the shoulders were still intact and we had a bottle of Chivas in the chalet...

The way back

And the night cap :pissed:

Thanks Sunsan, I always enjoy your photo's.

I'm heading to Kep/Kampot in a few weeks time, it's lovely to see it all nice and green.

Staying at www.jasminevalley.com, has anyone else been there before?

Early the next morning we were greeted by this sight

Image

Fishermen coming back home from a night at sea

Then off to breakfast here

Image

The old bridge just down the street

Image

A short look- see at the town

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Back on the other side of the river, Kampot's famous product

Image

Found the market

Image

A first tantalizing glimpse

The King of Fruits!

And satisfaction... 2.50USD per kg ;D

Nice pictures there, SS.

I do like those bicycle trailers they have down there - not seen them elsewhere.

Somewhat reluctantly we turned the jeep towards Kep and left town.

Passing a pot shop

A construction materials shop

A spirit house shop

Then the arrival in Kep

Here it's crabs, not durians

And there, not that far away, was Koh Tonsay, Rabbit Island
