Going to rangoon soon
Going to rangoon soon
Ive got a mate arriving in the second half of feb and he wants to go to rangoon.
After the abortive attempt earlier in the year I am super keen.
I believe that one can fly from phnom penh now.
Has anyone been lately-it sounds great.

It is great, have fun.
Take NEW notes with you, 50s and 100s get you the best rates. No need to go to the black market anymore, the government has put them out of business by operating its own banks at realistic exchange rates.

I was there in December, although working rather than being there for fun. I love the place. Reminds me of Cambodia in the old days, but more populated.ken svay wrote:Ive got a mate arriving in the second half of feb and he wants to go to rangoon.

Never thought I'd be giving Ken advice but here goes....
1. Myanmar Airways International direct flights Wed and Sat to and from PP and Rangoon.
PP - Rangoon 1 hour 20 mins Rangoon - PP via SR about 3 hours with an hour in SR.
$280 RETURN FIXED PRICE.
2. You can get visa on arrival (1 month) $30, but may involve a long wait/queue.
3. IMPORTANT - you DO need pristine $ bills - any imperfections and they will NOT be accepted.
4. Taxis are cheap to get around about $2.50 any journey. Airport to town about $8.
5. Book accomodation in advance - most hotels were full when I went a week ago and I
was shunted from the one I had booked to another.
6. Change $ to kyat asap on arrival - rates around 810 kyat to $. You can only spend $ in
a few of the high end places.
7. Myanmar beer shops all over town around $1/800 kyat for a beer on the street. Western establishments
(the few that are there) are pricey. Monsoon though was a great restaurant just off Strand Road, there is a good
colonial restaurant and cafe near Bogyoke Aung San market, and the Strand Hotel Bar has 1/2 price drinks from 5pm
on Friday's (think Raffles here!)
8. Visit Schwedegon Paya - not doing so is like NOT going to Angkor Wat.
9. The tourist types in Burma will generally annoy someone like you - be warned!
10. Do NOT give any money to 3 year old girls working in bars!!!!!!!
Enjoy your trip.......

One thing though.
Burmese food is crap.
When you've realised that, go to the Indian, Chinese and especially Shan restaurants.

As far as I know, visas are not currently available on arrival. (well, not officially anyway.) You'll need to obtain one from an embassy first. Check with the embassy if you want to be certain.greenvespa wrote:(1 month) $30, but may involve a long wait/queue.
but...
you went a week ago and got a visa on arrival?? I know a guy who lives in Yangon who told me that's not possible at the moment. You need some paperwork done first. Unless you can confirm otherwise? I'd love to go soon aswell.greenvespa wrote:5. Book accomodation in advance - most hotels were full when I went a week ago
EDIT: It seems that you can actually get a visa on arrival if you're flying with Myanmar Airways International from Siem Reap. They have some kind of agreement, or something. Wierd.
It's possible if you fly in on MAI (Myanmar Air International) from either Phnom Penh or Guangzhou.
Since they started the flight last year
The Rangoon- Siem Reap flight has become a triangular flight since October, it now flies Rangoon- Siem Reap- Phnom Penh- Rangoon.
User Giblet took it pretty soon after the inaugural flight and might have posted about the ease of getting a VOA.
Has to do with the owner being a very big big shot.

You CAN get a visa on arrival flying in. But may be a long wait. Burma = Cambodia 10 years ago.
Many things will frustrate, however the road and transport system works a treat - road rules
obeyed to the letter of the law, although the vehicles aint like the 4x4s here I can assure you!!
Have a look at the Monsoon restaurant - superb!! (I have no affiliation!)

Thanks chaps,I knew about the VOA.
It sounds great.
I have an aussie railway website in my favourites and they spruik the circle line train trip around rangoon as a great experience.
I already know that the burmese read books and they are reputed to be the nicest people in asia-but wait until they meet me!
I always loved burmese days and more recently the book by the woman who followed orwells travails.
I have always wanted to go to moulimein,i hipe that I can.
I would like to hear about the war graves as well,I always visit these places.
My dad fought in burma,it was probably the worst theatre in WW2.
He commanded and indian divison who pushed into burma from India and helped defeat the jap.
I have several books on WW2 burma,it was horrendous when the europeans and anglo indians headed for india, tens of thousands died.
Many murdered by the burmese, who supported the jap for quite sometime.

I'm looking to go later this week/beginning of next but due to a change of plans I'm going to have to go from Bangkok. I hoping I can also get a visa on arrival flying with MAI from there too.
I hear there has been some fighting in the north and you are no longer permitted to go to Myitkyina and surrounds. true?

No VOA flying in from Bangkok. Get it at the embassy in Bangkok, not in PP (10 days- 2 weeks).
Otherwise, looking at their history, they were some of the cruelest in Asia. Until the Brits put a stop to the royal antics.
Don't fall for that BS. Yes, they're nice but nothing special. The women are more conservative than here, the men are more or less like here.ken svay wrote:...

Our of curiosity, is there a VOA if you fly in from some cities but not from Bangkok? Why? That makes no sense.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
MAI's owner is close to the top of the government. One reason supporters of the embargo don't recommend using MAI and why they don't mention the VOA or say there are 'frequently problems' with it.
The Rangoon- Guangzhou and Rangoon- Siem Reap/ Phnom Penh flights are the newest they have. So they're trying to make it easier for passengers on those flights.
Might also have a bit to do with there being no Burmese consulate in Guangzhou and it taking 10- 14 days to apply for a Burmese visa in PP.
