Takeo and the canals-wow
Pied Kingfisher.
Habitat is area from Africa to China.
9 other kingfishers in Cambodia. Some beautiful looking ones too.
Just for interest sake Mr Svay, here is a little chap you will probably have seen a lot as a kid. Also found in Cambodia. The Pied Fantail.
Bugger it, I'm going to go to PP, buy a bird book and a bag of jazz tobacco and some binoculars and become a birdwatcher. I need a hobby.

Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Here's one out the back of the house, it's a Collared Kingfisher.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Thats a good looking bird.Lucky Lucan wrote:Here's one out the back of the house, it's a Collared Kingfisher.

Thanks MM,that is the bird.
I have always seen kingfishers with beautiful plumage in NZ and australia but never the black and white ones.
I must go to the sarus crane reserve near kep, they have 90% of the worlds population-about 300 birds. The biggest flying bird in the world!
And cambodia has fantails as well?

The tallest flying bird, not the biggest.
Heaviest - kori bustard
Wingspan - wandering albatross/ Andean condor
Most powerful flying, maybe crowned eagle?
fastest - European swift/swallow/ peregrine falcon (in a dive)

I could well be wrong, but I thought the reserve was at Trapeang Thmar?ken svay wrote:Thanks MM,that is the bird.

The trip sounds excellent! How many people fit in the boat? Where did you get the taxi from in PP, and did you make it wait or got another one in Takeo? What was the cost?
Sorry for all the questions! I've always thought the long term expats with time on their hands could set up a mini business showing newbies etc really nice, interesting Cambodian sites that are off the tourist trail.

I spent 3 days in Takeo, my brother-in-law got married, lovely town. Stayed near the market at a guesthouse, $4 cable and fan room, lovely. At night it's a bit like K.Cham used to be, totally quiet after 8pm, deserted in most places.

Just got a wee boat this week. If you like my wife and I can show you some places off the tourist trail. In Kampong Thom halfway between PP and SR.Jessb52 wrote:The trip sounds excellent! A great trip report, MoodyMac, it sounds like a twitcher's dream too!MoodyMac wrote:Saw a lot of those black and white kingfishers heading down the Stung Sen river from KPT to the southern end of the Tonle Sap.
Also a small heron or stalk. I plan to go down again in march, as the bird reserve will have a lot of birds due to the water being low and makes for easy fishing for them.
Anyone know of a good SE Asian bird identification book? Bird watching is big business apparently. In fact any hobby or pastime that becomes an obsession is good business. e.g. trout fishing, bird watching, golf, sex..........
I'd highly recommend the following field guide for identifying birds in Cambodia:
Robson, Craig (2009) "The New Holland Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia"
My copy was invaluable when I visited Kampot and Bokor last year, and it withstood getting drenched too (I'd bought the edition with the plastic cover thankfully)!
Thanks Cyclo, I'll look it up and see if I can get my hands on a copy. Just reading earlier today on different areas to check out birds. The Kampong Thom grasslands on the Tonle Sap flood plains are home to the Bengal Florican. It is on the critically endangered list. Found mostly in India, and this colony hanging on grimly in an area that will no doubt become heavily used for dry season agriculture. Also Greater Spotted Eagles and Pied Harriers. Haven't found any useful information on the Boeng Tonle Chhma bird reserve on the eastern side of the Tonle Sap, but would be keen on heading in for a look in March. If there are any part time bird watchers or twitchers keen on coming for a look around let me know.

CT2U was correct, that the Trapeang Thmar reservoir in Banteay Meanchey (on the border with Siem Reap) is a wildlife reserve specifically because of the Sarus Crane. So that would be a place to go look at birds, at least the feathered varieties. It's improved quite a lot since I first went there in 1994...MoodyMac wrote:Thanks Cyclo, I'll look it up and see if I can get my hands on a copy. So after spending a good part of the week reading about birdlife in Cambodia, who should walk into the hotel today but a group of seven people wearing drab olive outfits with binoculars around their necks. Just spent the morning at the Kampong Thom grasslands near Stoung looking at the Bengal Florican.
The Australian guy leading the group travels all around the world, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia and to the Middle East every year leading groups of bird watchers.
