Takeo and the canals-wow
I love seeing the birds here as well.
I must buy a book,I have an excellent book on the Se asian flora that I bought at bangkok airport.
Rangoon has really good bird life due to its open spaces.

Serendipitously, we saw two pied kingfishers while out riding our mountain bikes in SHV this morning, on the powerwire, down near Sokkaha Resort, I assume a pair (one of the reasons I don't bother with a scooter), they were calling to each other. If not for reading this thread I would have had no idea what they were, so thanksken svay wrote:I love seeing the birds here as well
Great to see that Khmer440 has educational value. And to think people write it off as a nasty, snarky, sex pat forum.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.
There are two sarus crane reserves, the other is near kompong trach according to the snooky guide book.
There are about 300 birds there for the season apparently,I must go and have a look.
Its great to see people here with an interest in wildlife.
Did anyone else watch that bizarre movie about the american guy and his korean mate who went looking for the some woodpecker in the US?
I googled the bird and sure enough there have been unconfirmed sightings but it was hard to work out whether the film was a piss take or not.

Re the Sarus cranes,I met a couple in the bar here about a week ago who had been to see them at the reserve near Kampong Trach. They said there were hundreds of them in a couple of fields there. They did leave detailed instructions on how to get there by road.If you need them I will try and find them and post here.
The only "Western style" bar in Ha Tien
This is a new reserve set up at the beginning of last year.
Mlup Baitong are the NGO that are setting things up there, below is a download link to their final report. At the bottom of the report, they mention stakeholder groups being established - namely: Koh Thnaot village in Prek Kreus commune, and Chress village in Boeung Sala Khang Tboung commune.
The area's split between the 5930 and 5829/5929 JICA maps and is slap-bang on the Viet border.
5930 - Prek Kreus
Map 5829/5929 - Boeung Sala Khang Tboung, Koh Thnaot
To get there, turn east off the 31 southbound onto the 117 just before Kampong Trach. Dirt road if memory serves.
Mlup Baitong have an office in Phnom Penh that's a block or two south of Toul Sleng - maybe worth a visit for some background before you go and maybe a guide if they still have people in the field there.
According to their studies (2009 / 2010), April has the highest number of Sarus Cranes... for a chance to see Painted Storks, go in March. In April, you could also see:Mlup Baitong's report wrote wrote:In addition to above project results, monthly bird surveys and monitoring were also undertaken by LCG team working at KTIBA. 35 bird species including one globally threatened (eastern Sarus Crane) and two globally-near threatened species (Black-headed Ibis and Painted Stork) were recorded and the monthly highest counts of each bird species were made during the project period (Annex 1).
According to subsequent surveys from 2002-2010, 51 bird species were recorded at the site consisting two globally threatened species and three globally near threatened species (Annex 2). Sarus Crane is the most significant and recognized species for conservation work at KTIBA.

Ironically, the (artificial) habitat for these birds was created in both cases (Banteay Meanchey and Kampot) by the Khmer Rouge. And both were rehabilitated by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology as part of their irrigation work in the 1990's and 2000's.
Here's a video of 'Kens Big Day Out"
Excuse the quality it was made with my phone.

I take it you guys were in one of those little boats with the outboard motors. They must really speed along compared to the other boats on the canal. I bought one of those blue and white fibreglass long boats you can see in the vid. I got the 9.9 metre version. Put a floor in, and got a canopy roof frame made up for it. Now just need to get the canvas (where?) for the roof and put the seats in and I'll be ready for the rainy season. I love travelling on the water. So much better than the roads, but takes a lot longer.

I reckon a Jet-ski power unit bolted into on of those fiberglass longboats would be the go.Skimming across shallows, nets and weed with no prop to fowl. Would also be good in the summer when water levels drop and the outboards can't make it up the cannals.
See if that works.
thanks for the info on the birds,I mus get down there and have a look.
I have taken two different roads to the border before, one of them must be 117.
I will find that baitong place before I go and buy the bird book.
