I did a search for Koh Kong on the K440 front page and no results were found. I can't believe it's never come up, so maybe the search function isn't quite working properly yet?
Anyway, probably just for one night...anyone have a favorite place to stay on the relatively cheap side (not Otto's Guesthouse kind of cheap) or favorite restaurants/bars? No time for nature excursions, but besides that is there much to do kicking around the town?
Koh Kong
What kind of place are you looking for? There's the Apex Hotel, which looks very nice, has decent rooms from $10/15 and up. It has a swimming pool and a small upstairs terrace cafe overlooking the street.
Could have been a nice place, but some of the things that put me off this place (when I stayed there, about 8-9 months ago) was:
-In the swimming pool there would always be a couple of ill-mannered braggart sexpats with very loud teenage hookers, not even trying to be discreet. Behaving like they were in the privacy of their hotel room.
-There were hordes of noisy, drunken Thais yanking the door knob of every door of the floor they were staying at trying to find their room when they came home at night.
-And there was the terrace cafe where you could sometimes sit in relative peace and quiet - enjoying your meal/beer - until inevitably some whoremonger would enter the cafe with the crackwhore he barfined the night before, completely ruining the calm atmosphere with annoying loudmouth behaviour.. laughing, grab-assing and constant eardrum-piercing broken Thai/Khmer/English conversation. While attempting to ignore them, I would turn my head in the opposite direction, outwards to the street.. Where I would see either the long-time whores walking out of the reception to get a motodop back home, or if it was in the evening, sexpats staying at the hotel arriving on motos with barfined whores in tight miniskirts and heavy make-up.
It felt like I was staying in a Nana Plaza hotel.. It wasn't what I was looking for, so I stayed only one night.
Another hotel I stayed at was the complete opposite of the Apex. The Phou Mint Koh Kong Hotel.
Very quiet. They said they were almost full, but I rarely saw other guests while staying there. Nice location, with a view of the bridge, overlooking the water. Think I payed $12 for a standard room on the second floor with air & tv. If you want quiet I would recommend this hotel.
Top left corner on this map:
The bridge you see is where you'll be coming from if you come from Trat, Thailand.
On another trip I stayed at the Dugout Hotel.
It's on the main street. I think I payed $12. Nice place. I can recommend this as well. The hotel has 7 Airconditioned rooms - all with ensuite, large fridge+fan+tv - around the perimeter of a nice little pool .
The Dugout is close to the roundabout by the market on this map. The Apex is a little further up to the left:
Cafe Laurent is a very nice restaurant "on" the water, close to the Phou Mint Koh Kong Hotel.. Great for a couple of drinks/beers and some food in the early evening - watching the sun go down ..the calming sound of the water and the nice breeze.. Very relaxing.

What's that car? it looks like a 2CV customized for weddings.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
No prob
If you like Thai food you should check out Baan Peakmin Restaurant on street 6, north of The Dugout. Good Thai food (mainly seafood) in a nice outdoor setting.
Waterfront bar is located down by the water, next to the ice cream place on the map. Great view. Decent prices. (I didn't eat there so I don't know about the food.) Nice place to have a mid-day siesta while you look at the world through the bottom of a beer glass.
If you have the time and get bored in the city.. you could check out the Koh Kong Safari World, or the mangrove forest.. Both a short ride from the city. There's also a nice restaurant in the mangrove forest - their fresh crab is very good. The restaurant is built over the water. With a nice view of the mangrove forest.

Good stuff Doctor_d.
You got any favorite places to stay and things to do in Sihanoukville? I may have several days there. IF I survive the bus journey that is.

I take it you won't be booking with Rith Mony to travel on a Paramount bus?
You could organise a night trip...
I once left Phnom Penh at 11pm and arrived in Sihanoukville at 230am, went on my 15 year old Baja 250.Now that was an interesting trip! And relatively idot-driver free, too.

I've stayed at the Beach Road Hotel
and the Beach Club Resort
earlier.. Both decent hotels with a private swimming pool, a bar with a view of the street and a pool table. Beach Road have rooms from 15 and up, Beach Club from 25 and up.. It's a little expensive for me, as when I'm in Sihanoukville it's only for a couple of days to get away from the city - to relax and enjoy the beach. I don't spend much time in the hotel room and I don't need a pool.. When Apple Guesthouse opened I started staying there.
Great location. 2 minutes walking distance from the beach, $8 rooms (They were $5 not long ago!) with tv, fan, toilet, cold water shower. A 24 hour mini-mart on the premises.. Which means you have cold beer a few steps away from your room 24 hours a day! They also have ac rooms from $12.
Map:
Reef Resort does some great Mexican food.
They also have Pacifico beer and lots of different hot sauces (yes.. Cholula and Tapatio too). I always go to eat there at least a couple of times when in Sihanoukville.
Reef Resort Chili Burger and a Jalapeno poppers side-order:
I'll post some activity tips later.
Edit: updated map.

For Indian food I always go to Maharaja on Victory Hill. Very good food.
For Italian food Trattoria Barbarella is pretty good
He does a great steak (The Italian cook). Nice view there as well. Just across from the Golden lions roundabout.

Good stuff. Random question... How much can a moto from the Utopia (bar with the deadly swimming pool) to Victory Hill be had for?
Hmm.. Not sure. I drive my own bike down there.cambod wrote:Good stuff. Random question... How much can a moto from the Utopia (bar with the deadly swimming pool) to Victory Hill be had for?

For stuff to do.. There's not that much. You could go to the Kbal Chay waterfalls. It's a 30 minute ride from downtown. Lots of hammock restaurants. Some are built very close to the waterfall so you get a great view. Plenty of Khmers go there for a family "picnic".. Now and then you see some barangs. Great place to bring a book and just stay for hours, eating.. reading.. sipping beer. (The free guide magazines in Sihanoukville will have a map and a 'how to get there')
Another place I mentioned earlier in another thread is a small beach close to the naval base. There's a bunch of hammock restaurants lined up along the beach where you can eat, drink, relax and watch the fishermen working out on their boats. It's very quiet there. I've only been a couple of times and I've never seen any barangs there. Not many Khmers either.
The road going there is quite nice and scenic. You'll pass a nice little temple on the way.. Don't think too many people go out there. Some Khmers I know showed it to me a couple of years ago. When I want some peace and quiet I drive out there to relax. (Warning: there's little if any English spoken here. Menus are in Khmer as well..)
View from the restaurants:

From memory, it should be somewhere around here (where the mouse pointer is):
I'll add more later..
