Independence Hotel v Sokha Beach Resort
What are the pros and cons of these two places? I'm willing to splash out but their web sites don't do it for me. Or are there other decent alternatives on/near the beach, don't want smelly backpackers anywhere near me. I looked on the net but nothing was appealing.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.
I prefer the Independence.
Sokha has a slight edge with breakfast, but that's it.

A few years ago, not long after the Independence Hotel (re) opened I tried to take my wife and another couple there for dinner.
The girls refused to go.
There are monsters (ghosts) there.
As for the Shoka, I have never stayed there but I have visited a few times. High prices for beers etc, as you would expect in a 5 star resort, however in true Cambodian fashion it is IMHO the worlds only 5 star resort with 2 star service.

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

Took my girl to Independence a few weeks ago. Very good service, nice room with balcony & gorgeous view, beautiful beach, relaxing pool and scenic setting.
She was a bit apprehensive at first, but in a luxury vs. ridiculous superstition battle, luxury won quickly.
Less bling than Sokha, IMHO. I prefer it. Some parts are a bit tired, but that brings a certain charm to the place.
Make sure to ask for a room in the new section, it's worth it.

Victory Beach Hotel is definetly worth a look. I had dinner there one night and had a look at the rooms out of curiosity. No backbackers and a quiet clean beach.horace wrote:What are the pros and cons of these two places? I'm willing to splash out but their web sites don't do it for me. Independence hands down, the new bungalows are nice and the beach with shade trees and rocks is much nicer than sokha.
Breakfast at both not up to scratch but what would you expect from khmers?
The ghosts seemed to have gone, thats why we have pchum bun.

So far the Independence is winning . It does appeal, but purely just to see the change when i last stayed there ( for a bet)overnight in 2000.
Has been over ten years since i hit Kompong Som and I'm working up to it, but there must be other choices of hotels other than these two and Victory Beach hotel (thanks hoophearted).
Come on folks, what about those living there? I'm planning a holiday of a lifetime for family and have already booked my Kampot leg , and my island part, now i need a decent but quirky place for Kompong Som

Sokha resort just sounds vulgar to me, whereas the Independence Hotel has a touch more class about it. Which hotel did Jacqueline Kennedy and Catherine Deneuve stay at? Clue - not the Sokha resort.
On the other hand, I went to the Independence Hotel 12 years ago when it was a wreck and the Khmer who took me there wouldn't follow me in - he said it was a haunted house.

I'd love to go into the Independence bungalows and see what they're like. Stayed there in 1993, prolly a bit different experience. I remember a ginormous Russian chopper (the big suckers) showing up one day at the end of the beach road and discharging the Dutch Battalion. They wandered around in their uniforms and didn't go for a swim or anything, think they were just out for a jolly. One other time we hiked up the stairs to the top of the old hotel part during the rains, it was spooky and way cool.

Interesting and what I was told back in 2000 was that a whole lot of killing went on in those rooms back in the mid 70s. I have no idea whether this true or not but my middle aged local driver back then would not cross the threshold.
