Hiring a car - average daily cost and opinions sought
My mate, who is a sound driver and a level-headed and practical lady, is thinking about hiring a car here when she comes out to visit. I said just come here and see what you think of the traffic first....
She has driven in many countries, on both sides of the road, and in third-world nations. This will be her first time in Cambodia though.
Just wondering what tips/opinions anyone might offer on the driving/road hazards between PP and SR, for example.
In addition, I have barely asked around, but heard cars can be hired for about $45 a day. That quote was given to me by a business in the Riverside area, so I'm guessing it might be more expensive than the norm? Anyone know the best deal, most reliable hire vehicles in PP, etc.?
For further context, I haven't driven/motoed here yet as the combo of US driving plus general whackness on the roads has me still a little intimidated. So hence, would be cool to hear constructive opinions from those in the know. Ta!

She will need a Cambodian licence to drive legally and to get insurance.
I don't think she'll be able to get one, plus it takes a while, plus it costs $50ish.. .

And if I'm wrong about any of this, someone will be along shortly to point out my errors...diamond lady wrote:Ah - good to know. Chur!
Hire cars from about $35 a day,try lyna garage. But dont expect the CD player to work or the AC to be cold.
Khmer licence essential for insurance but I would advise that a newbie should not rent a car.
Driving in cambodia is a steep learning curve.

I think she could get by on an international licence for a month or so, in line with many other countries. If she's renting a car presumably the rental company arranges the insurance.cambod wrote:She will need a Cambodian licence to drive legally and to get insurance.

No idea if they'd accept an international licence for renting though...
There was an article in today's Phnom Penh Post about the ambitious 27 year-old female owner of the "Daily Rental Company". She said her rates were $40 a day with driver, and $5 a day for insurance.
EDIT: the rate above is for a car AND driver, so no need for licence or insurance (other than the usual travel insurance).

You can get it in a week, it just costs about $20 more.cambod wrote:She will need a Cambodian licence to drive legally and to get insurance.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Things have changed A LOT in the past few months. I'm not sure if that's still currently an option..LaudJohn wrote:You can get it in a week, it just costs about $20 more.cambod wrote:She will need a Cambodian licence to drive legally and to get insurance.
