Hi folks,
Long-term Thailand expat here, frequent visitor to Cambodia but haven't posted on here before. I'm thinking about bringing the (Thai) gf over to escape Songkran in Siem Reap next April.
As far as I understand it, Khmer new year doesn't generally feature the same kind of madness as its Thai equivalent, which sounds good to me. Is this a particularly good/bad time to visit SR and take her round the temples, or should it not make much difference?
Cheers!
Siem Reap over Khmer New Year?

you are correct, there really isn't the same level of madness... not even close to it.
last year I didn't get wet at all in Siem Reap, there is still plenty of partying, but you can avoid the madness.
head out of town with some of the locals and you can do some dancing and get covered in talcum powder...
I would say its not too bad a time - they do have big celebrations at the temples though...
however plan to travel (if by land) a couple of days before Songkran week, and don't don't expect to travel until a few days after the end of songkran...
unless you currently live in Pattaya - in which case you'll need to wait even longer because of the extended songkran celebrations they do there.

Very little water throwing as the government has campaigned against it. A little at temples and in the villages. Siem Ream will be packed though.

Last year, the water throwing and other (mostly good-natured) mayhem was strictly confined to Pub Street and only allowed on the evening of New Year's Day itself.
That said, I did have a middle-aged Khmer woman smear my face with talcum powder while standing at the supermarket checkout.

Thanks guys. Currently living in Bangkok, and we'd be flying direct to SR so no worries on that front. Sounds like a plan!
